Hello all, I am very new to using linux in any form so please bear with me. Im trying to get a linksys wpc11 v3.0 wireless notebook card to work in DSL. My notebook is an old toshiba satellite 2615dvd with only 64megs of memory.

A friend of mine pointed me to DSL for a lightweight OS to run this old pc. Ive searched this forum and ive googled as many word combos involving this topic as I could and nothings worked, so heres my last resort.

According to most things I read this card should have been picked up "out of box" if not then at least a simple set up with prism2 or Ndiswrapper. This however has not been the case. Ive tried dsl 2.0, 2.1rc1 and 2.1rc2. One forum pointed me in the direction of linux-wlan-ng-0.2.3, but I cant figure out how im supposed to install this in linux, and the readme starts talking of compiling and really is beyond me when it comes to linux.

So im hoping someone here can help me out. Ive tried to be as detailed as possible, and would really like to get this working as it runs great otherwise on this old laptop. One other thing to mention, on bootup I see this error code "get dev info on socket0 failed: resource temp unavail" im pretty sure it refering to card but not sure.

Sorry for such a long post but hopfully someone might help me out here. Thanks much in advance.

You may use NET8180.inf and rtl8180.sys with NDISWRAPPER. Good luck :D

WPC11 v4 is Realtek.
WPC11v3 is Prism2.5 or Prism3, so all you should need to do is set up the linux-wlan-ng driver from DSLPanel > Prism2.
If this doesn't work, do some troubleshooting.
Run "lsmod" to see what modules are loaded - hopefully you will see prism2_cs which is what you want, but the system may have loaded the orinoco and/or hermes modules.  These older modules offer limited Prism2 support.  If they're there, unload them -
sudo rmmod orinoco
sudo rmmod hermes
Now try DSLPanel > Prism2 again.  Still no success?  You may need to restart cardmgr, try this -
read PID </var/run/cardmgr.pid
sudo kill $PID
sudo cardmgr

(Edit)
Tempestuous, I must have been typing this out when you posted. Ill try what you listed and get back to you. I do know I tried using the prism2 config thing already, but ill check those mods you listed. Again im very new to linux so the more you bumb it down for me the better.  Thanks
(Edit)

Well this didnt work, im starting to lose hope here. Just to double check this is what I did. I downloaded driver from realtek link, and saved to a floppy. I booted dsl 2.1rc2from disc, then mounted floppy with the desktop tool on right. I then open dsl control panel/Ndiswrapper.

inf file: /mnt/auto/floppy/linksys(folder i put it in)/net8180.inf
device: wlan0
sid: my sid
wep: my 128bit wep key (tried disabling wep all together from router also)

Still no go

Also this is the error I see while boot up, maybe someone will see something here that helps.

cardmgr 73 starting version is 3.2.5
cardmgr 73 socket 0: Anonymous Memory
cardmgr 73 executing:  'modprobe memory_cs'
cardmgr 73 +modprobe: cant locate module memory_cs
cardmgr 73 modprobe exited with status 255
cardmgr 73 module /lib/modules/2.4.31/pcmcia/memory_cs.0 not  available
cardmgr 73 get dev info on socket 0 failed: Resource temporarily unavailable

Hopefully this might help if not maybe someone could point me in the direction of another small distro thats user/newbie friendly.

Thanks again for any and all help. :;):  :;):  :)

Ok, I tried prism2 setup again, heres what I did
Prism2 setup
device: wlan0
channel:9 (thats what router and all other wireless comps in house are on)
sid: my routers sid
wep: my 128bit wep key

hit ok and nothing happens

I ran lsmod and prism2_cs is in there and no orinoco and/or hermes modules.

Tried the restart cardmgr string you gave me, and it said something to the effect of watchng two sockets and that was it. Really starting to get bummed here this OS runs so well and speedy on this old laptop, but with no wireless it pretty much makes it worthless for me.

So back to winblows I guess, its slow as shit but it works heh...

With the WEP key, you must place a colon between every two characters ... this is a nuance of the linux-wlan-ng driver's configuration utility.
Though, when first setting up your wifi adaptor you should probably first check that you can connect with NO encryption ... even Window$ documentation suggests this.
