I made this module and it is in the release_candidate area.
It is not an extension yet. I wanted feedback, as I don't have such device. It is only a single module, so I would suspect only an insmod rt2500 would be needed and not modprobe. The difference between these commands is for loading of other dependent modules, which there are none. So, I would think a simple insmod rt2500 and then apply your iwconfig commands. Still waiting feeback. You can grab it here
copy it into /home/dsl and load it like this -
sudo insmod /home/dsl/rt2500.o
Then use the iwconfig gui with ra0 instead of eth0
Please let me know

Roberts i restarted our conversation here as it was kinda buried in another off topic post elsewhere.

Heres whats coming up with that module
Code Sample
insmod /mnt/hda5/rt2500.o

Code Sample
ifconfig -a

reports that lo and ra0 are both there
Code Sample
iwconfig ra0 essid my_essid key 1A23B45CD6 mode managed

seems to work as well...
Then i do:
Code Sample
pump -i ra0

and the system freezes, i lose keyboard control and mouse control.
If i use the DSL Control Panel widget and set up Wlanconfig all is well, then when i set up the Iwconfig from inside the DSL Control Panel widget again the system freezes me out losing keyboard and mouse control.
this is under DSL 2.0~2.1b under DSL 1.5 I can get the wifi working using a package one of our forum members sent along to me.
So being a big noob i'm not sure where to proceed from here, any assistance greatly apreciated.

Have tried this on both gateway solo 2500--366mhz Mobile PII--288mb ram and IBM thinkpad--366mhz Mobile Celeron--256mb ram
Results are consistent.

Thanks,
Rob

Thanks. We now know that these drivers and SMP enabled kernel are not compatible. That is one reason for the Site News concerning such.

I guess I'm going to have to get a new wireless card? =\

I think I might be better off with another distro now or 1.5... What exactly are the differences between 2.0 and 1.5?

DSL 1.5 is based on Linux kernel 2.4.26
DSL 2.0 is based on Linux kernel 2.4.31

Something changed in the Linux kernel because the rt2500 driver module no longer works unless you recompile the 2.4.31 kernel and disable SMP (muti-CPU support).

starcannon and Landon,
Similar to starcannon's problem, forum member captainpotato recently reported a system freeze after running pump - < http://damnsmalllinux.org/cgi-bin....6;st=15 >
but was successful assigning an IP address manually.
