I am new to DSL, i want to buy wireless card that works out of box,
I thought dwl-g650 would be good since 802.11g would be supported,
but at stores I only find version v.B5 and when try to buy off internet version not listed.  on working list they specify v.c2 will other versions work
or can someone help me find v.C2

I have the D-Link DWL-G650 "Air-Plus Xtreme G", and it works well.  According to the back of the card it is H/W Ver. :B5 and F/W Ver. :2.54.  If I have the card plugged in at boot it is auto detected and set up as "ath0".  I am using the DWL-G650 on my Compaq 1610 Presario with DSL ver 2.2

thanks for your response, I went ahead and bought
the same card you have, but it does not come up when

I tried mine in 2.2rc1 and it worked also.  It may be, that on your Compaq, the card is not autodetected.  You could try to manually load the modules from the command prompt (or xterm window). Try:

sudo modprobe ath_hal
sudo modprobe wlan
sudo modprobe ath_pci

(you shouldn't need "ath_pci", but I listed it in just incase)

If everything is working, one light should light up on the card to show it is active.  The card shows up as "Atheros Communications, Inc." on the DSL Control Panel, PCMCIA Tool, info window.

Just curious, did you verify that the PCMCIA itself is detected on boot?

its me again, tried what you said, the green light is on and the card does show up as you said when
go to PCMCIA tool on dsl panel
but when did sudo modprobe ath_pci
it came back with error /lib/modules/2.4.26/net/ath_pci.o: init_module: not such device
it gives me hint saying maybe invalid IO or IRQ parameter
it tells me to try dmesg so i did
got an error that says unable to attach hardware; HAL status 13
any ideas
thanks for your help
any ideas

I wasn't sure about the the "ath_pci" module (if it was needed, or not).  I think it is only applicable to a wireless pci card.  I believe you have the card active, the only thing you thing you need now is to find the signal.  Try "sudo pump -i ath0".  The "pump" command should find the signal if it is a dhcp router is being used.  Otherwise, you will need to set up the proper ip numbers with "iwconfig" (Sorry, I'm not to well versed in doing that).  You could also try either Netcardconfig or Wlanconfig in the DSL Control Panel.

I have successfully used to "pump" command to connect to wireless hotspots.  When it works, the second light activates when its connected.

did what you said; got operation failed and no second light

dgilbert, I just figured something out..... I was incorrect about the DSL version I was using when the card worked "out of the box".  The DWL-G650 worked great with DSL 2.1 (kernel 2.4.31) after installing the madwifi.dsl extension.  You are correct about the errors in 2.2 (kernel 2.4.26).  I did some messing around and I do have the card working using ndiswrapper and the win-drivers that came with the card.
