Connecting to Internet through a DSL linkForum: Networking Topic: Connecting to Internet through a DSL link started by: ragdsl06 Posted by ragdsl06 on Feb. 24 2006,05:27
Dear DSL colleages,I have installed the ISO Image on a CD-R and was able to get Damn Small Linux working on a HP Pavilon PC. But I just cannot get to link with Internet. I selected System-Net Setup-PPPoEconf then answer all question, put my domain name and password, but cannot connect. I checked through Firefox and there is not link. I am supprised to see noting on the board and in the documentation on this web site talking about that. It seems that everybody has not trouble with this matter except me. When I load Linux, it recognize the Ethernet card, the DHCP and mentionned (Backgrounding). Could someone, please shed some light on that. Thank you very much in advance for your kind assistance. You're probably going to have to give more information, ie- how do you normally access the Internet? Does the DSL in the post title mean digital suscriber line? Is this a wired or wireless NIC? Do you use a firewall router? Is the NIC getting an IP address from the dhcp server?

Thank you ''larkl'' to take your time to help me out with that problem.I have a Dell Computer running XP-PRO SP2, which has been used to configure a Linksys Cable/DSL Router, which is connected to a SpeedStream DSL modem always on and connected to a phone line. My second computer, the HP, has WinMe installed on it. I used to have Fedora Core 2 on it also. When I did install Fedora, I recall that the connection with the DSL modem and to my ISP has been quite straightforward. At that time I was not using a Router. I can access Internet for WinMe through the router without any problem, meaning that the router and the DSL modem seem to work fine also on the HP side. But if I boot from the Dams Small Linux (lets call it DSLinux to avoid confusion with the DSL Modem) located on a CD-R (iso), the OS is able to see the eth0 card. The OS writes on the top right screen something like box 192.168.1.101 which is the second connection on the router, the first one being the Dell XP. Then, I go right click to select system;netsetup;ppp0Econf. A first window shows up and I get a serie of questions on a few more windows. I answer YES to all of them, to finally arrive at a request for a username. I type the same name that I do use either on my WinMe or Win XP popup window for connecting to the ISP. The name looks like name@domainname.com. I click Return, then I am invited to enter my password. As for WinMe and XP I enter the same password. Then click return. The DSLinux asks if I want to boot with it and also if I want to start a session right away. I choose YES. Then the ppp0Econf window shut off. I go to Apps; Net; Browsers; Firefox; but cannot link to the Internet. I have try Pon instead of pp0Econf since there is a readme window by Damn Small Linux that says you may be already connected to Internet so just use pon to access it then poff to turn it off. It does not help. I have also try the DHCL for getting an automated IP. I didn't help either. I hope that those information will help you a bit more, to figure out a solution. Again thank you very much for your interest and kind assistance. Posted by larkl on Feb. 25 2006,12:28
Can you ping the router successfully, ie -ping 192.168.1.xxx? It seems that the DSLin box is getting an IP address from the router, if I read your post correctly. If so, I'm not sure I understand your comment about DHCL. I don't have PPP experience with DSLin, so I can't help on that end.

If the router is already connected to the DSL modem, then that means the modem already has a bridged connection and the router is sending the password and username info to the ISP. You only need to make sure the DHCP server on the router is on and the DHCP client in DSL is activated. You don't need PPOe, PPP, or anything else.

Yes larkl I can ping that address, which is the address provided by the router. Sorry I used wrongly DHCL instead of DHCP. Thanks! Hello doobit, I have checked again the setup of my router. The DHCP is Enabled. The router is configured to ask for an IP Automatically. In the Status section of the router, called DHCP Active IP Table, I can see listed, my Dell XP and the ''box'' from my HP corresponding to DSLinux. Additionnal information: when the DSLinux boot, just after the ''Autoconfiguration Device'' searching, I do get this message: Network card eth0 detected, DHCP Broadcasting for IP (Backgrounding). Following your comments I went just after DSLinux is ready, to System-Control Panel and saw that DHCP Client was depressed. So from my understanding up to now, is that the electronic and the local networking with the router and the DSL modem are working well. The proof I can communicate with you from my Dell XP. But what I have to be able to do on the HP DSLinux, is to trigger some kind of window in order to say to my ISP I am there and I want to get connected, so that I can entered both the requested username and password. They only place I see, that I can do that, is through System-Net Setup-DSL/PPPoE-PPoEconf. There, I have access to a serie of window asking questions one after the other for configuring the PPPoE. But I have to answer YES to most questions, if I do not want to be flushed out of the dialog boxes. Finally, in one of those dialog boxes, there is one asking for a username and a password. However, when I get out of this procedure, clicking to APPS-Net-Browser-Firefox, it is unable to connect to the web. Since I am not very familiar with Linux and even less with DSLinux, should I go into a shell, then type something like pon -username - password or something like this, in order to tell my ISP that I want to get connected on the Internet Network? Thank you very much for you assistance. Regards ragdsl06.??? Posted by larkl on Feb. 25 2006,20:35
It seems to me (as Doobit already indicated) that all of the logon/ISP specifics are resident in the router. It's doing whatever magic (IP spoofing, passwords etc), that it needs to do to allow you to hookup. Unless there's some unusual setup with your ISP. Have you been connecting with multiple PC's using this router/configuration?

One additional thought. Can you try accessing the router configuration from the DSL box (I'm guessing that it's some sort of web-based config)? This would tell you if you're really getting to the router, but the ping worked - didn't it?

Hello larkl,In order to simplify the problem I have connected the HP with the DSLinux directly to the DSL Modem. Then I have turn on both. Then since my ISP requires that I connect throught PPPoE, I have lauch pppoeconfig then answers all the questions with YES, entrered my username and password. The program tells me that I am connected to my ISP. But Firefox cannot connect to the Web. So, I am the only one having the DSLinux, trying to get it work through a DSL (phone line) connection, having to enter a username and password, or I am the only one that cannot make it work? Thanks for your try! Regards, ragdsl06. |
