NVIDIA ethernet not recognizedForum: Networking Topic: NVIDIA ethernet not recognized started by: wh7qq Posted by wh7qq on Mar. 28 2006,19:32
My NVIDIA ethernet (on mobo) is not recognized...no network, no dhcp. It is recognized at boot in Knoppix and Kanotix. How to configure?

Try DSL version 2.1b with newer linux kernel version?

Yes, you need a newer kernel, since ethernet is a new thing for Nvidia.

Thanks, I am using 2.2. Guess I'd have to do an HD install and update the kernel. Do PCI ethernet cards work ok? I might be able to find one of those lying around. I also have a small HD put away that would work....download the kernel to a pen drive using my kanotix box so that I don't have to resort to a modem for the download. 2.1b has a 2.4.31 kernel. 2.2 has the 2.4.26 kernel. It was downgraded for recent versions because of some complaints that it didn't work as well with some older legacy equipment.

Most PCI ethernet cards work fine with either version of DSL. For example, Linksys or Netgear

Had the same problem in Puppy Linux and Knoppix - It is a driver problem - or rather the lack of them. Nvidia has a linux driver on their website and a user on the Puppy linux board has broken out the modules for the net connection and sound. They need to be copied to a file that will be saved in the persistant memory. Then they can be entered from a console when starting up or a script written to do so automatically - in Puppy at least you will get a warning message that using them will "taint the kernel". Results, at least in Puppy, have been good - no prioblems from the use of them so far. The post with the modules can be found at www.puppylinux.org - forums/users forum. If someone more knowledgeable in DSL can specify what would be the best places to put these files in DSL that would be a big help. Still something of a linux newbie and not at all familiar with DSL and its file structure.
