Downloads constantly stallingForum: Networking Topic: Downloads constantly stalling started by: NNP Posted by NNP on Mar. 31 2006,00:14
Hey, im having a very annoying problem with DSL whereby every time i get about 2 MB into a download it stalls completely. This has happened while trying to get both GNU utils and apt. Im using DSL embedded on a windows system. Im behind a router and using DHCP. The net connection in DSL appears to work ok other than this although i havent tested it much. Im not sure how dsl works via Qemu works but is it normal that while all my machines are on the 192.168.1.X DSL has been assigned an ip of 10.0.2.15? Other than that i must say im really impressed by the entire thing so congrats to the coders Thank you, NNP Posted by pr0f3550r on Mar. 31 2006,10:57
try "wget -v file"-v is for verbose, and post results Posted by cbagger01 on April 01 2006,05:50
Yes, it is normal.FYI, there was a bug in an old version of QEMU that causes network transfer corruption and interrupted dowloads and webpage loads. So if you visited a web page, sometimes some of the pictures would be corrupted and the page would not completely load. This was fixed around Nov 2004 if I remember correctly and if your QEMU is version 0.7.2 or 0.8 it is definately no longer a problem. Posted by cRunchy on April 02 2006,04:23
Just to add another voice: I too have this problem with QEMU version 0.8 (using QEMU Manager) where download stalls at around 1MB. When run via the embeded DSL with the packaged QEMU the download stalls at about 3MB. I can improve the download by saving to hda1 (a QEMU HD) but not by much. This all makes me think about memory or buffers? wget as far as I can see does not support the -v switch so I can't post any other info. Not a major problem as I just get the downloads I want via another method and drop them into the QEMU HD with WinImage.. I seem to remember however that I did have this working with an earlier DSL and \ or QEMU so I'll see if i can re-try that. cRunchy Pete Posted by pr0f3550r on April 02 2006,10:30
You're right, I'm sorry. Try wget -c 'file' -c is for : continue retrieval of aborted transfers Posted by cRunchy on April 03 2006,01:03
After messing about I seem to have over-come the problem more or less by changing the 'Mirror' to an FTP server. This is slow in comparison to the default HTTP but the server, QEMU, DSL or my host PC seem to cope with that speed better. I have no idea why this works better but all I can note is that the download speed is about one half to one third of the standard HTTP server. I assume as the world inside QEMU runs at a much much slower pace that it may be a speed, timeout or buffer issue somehow??? (My host is 1.7GHZ 512MB XP_SP1 on 1MB broadband via router.) Either way.. Should anyone else have this problem they may like to try using an ftp server - < ftp://ibiblio... > seems to work OK but haven't tested the rest. cRunchy Posted by SShadow on April 04 2006,17:30
I am having issues with this as well, both downloads stalling and webpages not loading. When I do an IFCONFIG I am getting TX packet errors and collisions in the output. This is a barely used (but shared) connection on 5mbs cable... No issues with Windows on this machine - wondering if there is a configuration somewhere that needs to be tweaked? Back to searching...

I can't get a single download though the myDSL... Everything stalls... Grumble. I've tried the FTP, HTTP and switching the mirrors... I've tried static'/ing my IP address (running through a Linksys router) and that doesn't seem to fix anything either. It's almost like my 'net connection is dropping - yet it never did that in Winblows.Nothing like getting back into Linux via a trial by fire. LOL I tried via the command line, but I just keep getting the usage options for wget - I am obviously not formatting the command right. I haven't gotten around to finding a man page or something similar on the command. Of course this isn't going to solve my Inet connection dropping out on me though. I've not had any problem with wget through a router, and a firewall, over wireless or hardwired. I'm just using the default settings.

This makes me wonder whether the problem might be due to network cards or drivers? As I said I can use FTP but not HTTP most probably because FTP is slower or less prone to errors... (General web browsing works fine.) For reference or comparison my setup is: System = XP on 1.7GHz 512MB Level = SP1 (I wonder if SP2 has less or more problems?) QEMU network settings = Default Network Card = Generic PCI - AcerLan ALN-325 Drivers = RTL8139 (XP's own driver version.) LAN = NetGear Router --> Broadband The other thought is whether using QEMU that is part of the "embedded" setup, "QEMU" as a separate install or "QEMU Manager" makes any difference. I prefer QEMU Manager but there may be slight differences that might help some people with the network problem? cRunchy Posted by doobit on April 07 2006,16:02
SP2 probably has more problems. Try setting your card's xmit and receive buffers to something like 128.

Just as a quick fix, Ive noticed that when a download stalls, if you go to a web browser and just start browsing, the download will actually start up again. Anyone know why this would fix this?
