Im gonig to try to use dsl as a router. I installed the 2 nics and used netcardconfig to config the ip addies  but now Im not sure what to do. Is the second network card my gateway? Im so confused.

Router or hardware firewall? If you're looking at building a firewall, why not look at IPCOP? It has DMZ, VPN, DHCP server...

You want Coyote Linux.  It fits on a floppy, you don't even need a hard drive or CD-ROM.

It should work with your hardware, if not you may want to check the < Linux Router Project >.  It's dead, but there are floppy images that should also do the job.  Pretty much the same requirements for LRP as for Coyote.

what min specs could a linux router be? can it be more or less anything

I used a 75Mhz Pentium and 16M RAM to route to two machines.  It seemed to work fine.  Anything better than that should give you no problems.
