Um.... PLease Help me... i am new to linux, but i know i shouldn't be starting out in Damm Small Linux, but hey gotta start somewhere, i didn't spend days downloading it 4 nothing..
Im having trouble... i cannot seem to put my dial up connection in there so i can access it and that... plz help me a step by step guide would be good.... umm can i access my msn messenger account through Damm Small Linux???

Hello,

I'm new to DSL myself. I'm on dialup using an old V90 external modem on the serial port of a very new Athlon pc so maybe I can help.

First things first, make sure you have all the info the dialup config needs from you. I am guessing you have access on windows and switch to using that to post to this forum.

1) Do you have your username and password?
2) Do you have the number you need to dial (also given to you by your ISP) to get an internet connection?
3) Do you have an external modem, if so, which port is it plugged into?

(if you have an internal modem the config "wizard" might be able to detect it automatically)

Ok, a step by step guide.. for this you need to right-click anywhere on the desktop that hasn't got a window or an icon. You should get a little menu with the "Damn Small" on top. As you would in windows, go to System> Net Setup> dialup PPP> config.

You should be now looking at a cream colored box entitled GNU/Linux configuration utility.

Use the arrow keys to navigate up and down the list. Select 'create an account' (first in list) then press [tab] so the ok is in red, hit [return] to confirm.

Next we input our provider. backspace to get rid of the provider. I found it easier to put in something very short. In mycase I only have the one ISP, blueyonder, so I put "blue" (without "") Note this is case sensitive. Keep it simple for now.

Now it asks for nameserver DNS. Its probably very likely its a dynamic IP, in other words, your IP is assigned to youyou, it changes everytime you connect etc. Little more involved, arrow keys to choose, use [space] to select, use tab to <ok> then [return]. If you know for a fact that you havea static IP, then you need to select that and enter first your primary IP number, and a secondary one if you have one. Otherwise leave blank and <ok>

Next is Authentication method for provider. I stuck with the first there, PAP. As it says in the box, if your ISP supports win95/NT then use PAP. Otherwise, try CHAT.

Next it wants your username, then your password, then your modem speed. Best stick with the default 115200.

Touch-tone phone? yup! So just ok the default, and now.. number to dial. Just type the number in as you normally would type the full number of say dialing a friend in another state. Here in the UK it tends to be 0845 if you are with BT.
You don't need to input the international code before it.

Next up is Choose Modem Config. This is the last one. Phew.. nearly there! Now, I asked you whether you had an external modem or an internal one. Its kind of relevant here (1). :nudge:

If you know its on the serial port, and unless you have the same board as me, you only have one of these. :P This will automatically be ttyS0 for com1, though the wizard says ttyS1 is the most common.
Setting the serial port is probably the setting we will keep returning to to 'get right.' I used the wizard first time round and it came up with ttyS1. No connection lol. There are only four options.. just backspace once and input 0 for now so it reads /dev/ttyS0 and ok it.

And now we scroll down to Finish, [tab] and ok that.

Thats the PPP config done. Now we go back to that right-click on desktop menu, System> Net Setup> dialup PPP> dial. enter the name we called the provider, in my case blue, and ok it. Pause, you should hear your modem dial. If not we go back to the serial port config and try ttyS1,2,3,4 til it dials.

Its worth scrolling thru and checking everything. Just be a bit wild with it. Theres nothing to be afraid of with this config.

I have been able to save my config, but I've not been able to restore it. Details of how to backup these settings are in the intro that pops up in dillo when you start DSL.

I have had to config my dialup everytime I run DSL. :laugh:

I don't mind it so much.

I have got used to the tab/arrow keys/spacebar routine and you need that in linux. :cool:

1) If its an internal modem, I do not honestly know. Someone here might be running DSL with a pci (or even an isa) modem and I do not no for certain how this is viewed.

no help for me here, I am new to linux entirely, and I can't dial-up no matter what I do, I have tried every single port 3 times, whenever I try and connect by, left clicking, system,net,ppp,dial or whatever I am kinda tired you know where to go, anyways, I try and connect, it brings up the dial-up box, and asks me to type in my connection name that I want to use, in my case it's "big" I hit tab, and enter, then the box disapeares and no dialing sound, no progress for dialing, no nothing, anyone know what's wrong? btw I am using an internal modem

my modem is a Conexant HSF V92 56k Data Fax PCI Modem, I'm am not sure if it is supported, and yes I am very much sure on my settings being correct, I wrote everything down, looked it over twice and still no dialing box, or dialing noise from the modem, or an in use light on my phone

To everyone thats trying to get dialup going,
You have to know what you have for a modem, externals are fairly well supported I think, not sure, never had one.
Internal pci modems have some support, Lucent/Agere, Conexant HCF, HSF can be used but you have to get a driver, most times that means getting the driver source code and compiling the driver. I have no idea about ISA modems, something tells me they're probably not worth the effort.

To compile the driver you need compiling tools that are'nt included in DSL or a lot of other Linux disros for that matter.
You will also need the kernel source and maybe kernel headers for some cards, for whatever kernel you're running.

I've built these drivers for every Linux distro I've had and in the end, it's a helluva lot easier to just get an external modem that you know is supported.
I'm on wireless now, (you have no idea how happy that makes me) course I ended up with a D-Link 520+ with a crappy TI chipset so I'm back to building drivers.

I won't go into configuring a Winmodem driver, you've got the fun of building it first but the Lucent/Agere package does some configuring for you, the HCF sometimes needs a symlink for /dev/modem.
Neither of these cards uses a standard /tty, they use /tty/LT0 for the Lucent or /tty/SHCF0 for the Conexant HCF

Check /proc/pci, it'll show the card name if it's detected. With these two cards I had only one distro that did'nt detect it.

Is there a command (or sequence of commands) to check that a modem is working and properly configured that could be run before trying to setup PPP? Would stty give useful information? Like other folks, I tried pppconfig and pon several times on my laptop, but I think the problem is simply that the modem is not configured properly. Maybe some expert could make a little "testmodem" script that newbies (like me) could run before bothering with PPP configuration.

ISA modems do work. I have a 56K, and use it all the time with Wvdial.
No, it will not work with the 6x or 7x DSL's, but will work with 0.5.3, which has Wvdial.

I'm using ZyXEL OMNI 56K. It's configured properly. When it dials ISP's number, system closes modem in about 40 seconds, no matter what connection sounds modem makes. When using Windows, Mandrake Linux 9.1, Knoppix 3.4, it connects very well. Anyone knows how to set modem timeout in DSL? Or any other suggestions?

Make sure you connect as "root", i. e. sudo su
the timeout you are experiencing can be better seen if you connect in an rxvt, so
the error messages can be seen. It's probably a permission thing, and connecting as root fixes that. Worth a try, anyway.

St_Slava; It could also be your PAP settings, password, username. There appears to be no feedback when a connection is made so give it a few seconds after the modem quits chirping and type 'route' to check if a connection has been established.

I have two ISA modems that were recognized without a problem.
I have two other PCI modems that are not recognized. One of them is on ttyS4 (used with Mandrake).
There is only 4 choices with DSL (ttyS0 through 3), how can I set more serial ports? In Mandrake, I used setserial.

I found it a little annoying to enter my connection name every time I would go on the internet, so I wrote a menu item to make the process a little easier. The menu file can be accessed by typing the following command in bash:
sudo -u root scite "/home/damnsmall/.fluxbox/menu"

Once the menu file is opened, the menu line to add is:
[exec] (Connect) {sudo -u root /usr/bin/pon ISP}

Replace ISP by the name you gave to your connection during PPPdial config.
The menu item will appear as "Connect".

Now what I would like to do next is launch my favorite browser automatically after the connection is successful. I am too new to Linux to come up with that script, but I am working on it!

Now regarding editing the menu, you may add the following line to the menu file:
[exec] (DamnSmallMenu) {sudo -u root scite "/home/damnsmall/.fluxbox/menu"}

.... but I am getting a little out of topic here ...

ive got two external modems.
they now both go to connect, but one doesnt dial.
i think its looking for a dial tone.
i know you can disable that in windoze, how do i do it
in DSL?

hi, i tried all the init strings and others i had found relating to my specific modem, but no cake.
I tried as root aswell, but it disconnects after 40 seconds or so.
Now im back to my original Internal Intel modem, which specificies Linux compatiblity.
Having trouble finding the COM port and along with the modem came a cd with LINUX drivers on it.
