Hey Everyone. As you can all probably see i am a total linux virgin, and am currently running Damn Small Linux 2.3 off of my SanDisk 512 CruzerMini. My system specs are: 10.3G HD 96M SDRAM 400MHz Celeron Processor I have 2 USB ports, One with my Sympatico DSL connected to it, and the other with a 4-port Belkin USB Hub. This hub is where is my pen drive is located. I love Damn Small, and it is a nice introductory distro for a noob like me. My main problem is that i cannot for the life of me figure out how to connect to the internet. My computer does not have an Ethernet card, ergo the USB DSL connection. I know absolutely nothing about that command-line interface thingy, and quite frankly am a little intimidated by it as well. I am sure that there is some other poor soul on these forums who has this same question, but i have already been here for 2 1/2 hours and haven't found a solution yet. If anyone could help me that would be great. Thank you in advance! Posted by doobit on April 20 2006,13:04
I'm glad you were able to get DSL to boot through the hub. It's difficult sometimes to get anything to work through a USB hub. I'm sorry I can't help you with the internet connection, although I know that the USB ethernet adapters work. If your DSL modem does have an ethernet port, then maybe one of those adapter would help. The issue with the USB connection to the DSL modem is that it probably requires some custom made software driver and the manufactuer would need to support Linux, then someone would need to package it up for Damnsmall Linux. With an ethernet connection, almost all of them are supported in Linux.Maybe someone else here has the same modem and has been able to make it work. Posted by Calabero on April 20 2006,13:07
i think i understand...so is there some place online where i could check for a USB driver for my Sympactico DSL Modem?

Sympatico, according to Wikipedia, used several different brands and models of modems. Do you know which make and model yours is? Usually there is a tag on the bottom that says.

umm......"SpeedStream 5200 ASDL Modem"

OK, I did a little research, and my best recommendation is for you to use the ethernet port on that modem. Ethernet cards can be had for less than $10 on ebay or maybe you can even get a used one at your local computer store.

Hi, I'm also new to linux and to DSL 2.3 as well. I have somewhat the same problem, I can't get to the Internet. I have the same modem, Speedstream 5200 from Sympatico. I have an ethernet card that is recognized by DLS while booting. I get this message when I "pon" in Aterm. SIOCSIFFLAG: permission denied /usr/sbin/pppd: can't open option file /etc/ppp/peers/dsl-provider: permission denied Anybody has a suggestion? Thanks Posted by doobit on April 20 2006,20:09
Yes. After you plug in the modem to the ethernet card, you should be able to use DHCP to connect to the internet through the modem because it is also a router with a DHCP server according to the documentation. If your ISP assigns a password then you may need to use set a network username and password. You do that through the administrative screens that you get when you type < http://speedstream > in a browser. You may need to setup either an ethernet bridge, if you have another router, and/or a PPP connection if that's the protocal that your ISP uses.

Well, it seems that I un-learned how to connect to the Internet, as I was not able to do it since the weekend. I know I do something wrong, but I can't figure out what. I am running DSL 2.3 from a Live-cd. My modem is a speedstream 5200 from bell sympatico Here's what I do: I go to the control panel and click on netcardconfig. I answer "no" to the question asked and go through automatic server authenfication. After that, I run pppoeconf and go through the process. I enter my internet access username and password. Everything seems to be fine so far. And when I type "pon" in a terminal, I get that message: SIOCSIFFLAG: permission denied /usr/sbin/pppd: can't open option file /etc/ppp/peers/dsl-provider: permission denied What are your thoughts: Is it a username and password issue or another configuration issue? I think this is simply a username and password issue but Bell Sympatico do not support tech problems to Linux users. Sorry to bother you folks with that, but an Internet connection is *really* useful |
