Modem and Network cannot be used together.Forum: Networking Topic: Modem and Network cannot be used together. started by: JB4x4 Posted by JB4x4 on May 14 2006,12:51
I have a small home network for sharing files, and dial-up for internet. When I boot my DamnSmallLinux machine it finds a local ip address for working on the network. When I try to use dial-up, everything seems to work, but I cannot view any web pages, (browser just hangs). It seems to me that since the computer has already assigned a local address using dhcp, I cannot be assigned a dynamic ip to surf the internet. I have confirmed this by booting with the cheat 'nodhcp", dial-up works fine, but the network doesn't.Just curious if anyone knows of a solution to this. (Yeah, I should get high speed and "use" the router the right way, but its not available.) Posted by DaveJ45 on May 23 2006,10:39
Set up a small DSL (or other) box with Internet sharing and put it on your network?Or set up one of your existing machines for Internet Sharing? That's what I would do if I was in the same position. Regards DaveJ45 Posted by pr0f3550r on May 23 2006,10:49
JB4x4,you can't have teo ip addresses at the same time. If you are using the network you have a private adress, if you dialup you get a public adress. But you can configure an external machine to be a dial up gateway. Posted by JB4x4 on May 23 2006,22:16
SuSE 10 allows me to run this way - In fact it is dialed in right now (for this post) and connected to the network to share files. I suppose it is just a script or setting somewhere, just haven't found it yet.
