I got the netgear usb wireless card from the wiki list to connect with hotspots.  I do not yet have a wireless router.  The card lights up upon boot but I don't think DSL recognizes the adapter yet.

I learned from reading forums to try iwlist scans or iwconfig to get things started when I'm near a hotspot.  But when I try that I either see "no wireless extensions," or "Failed to read scan data : Function not implemented"

Does anyone have some advice to configure and connect without a router or WEP?  Thanks a lot.

Hi
I haven't used mine at a hotspot but I use mine here at home.  It is a Prism2 device.  I just plug it in before I boot and after everything is up I open the DSL control panel and click on the Prism2 button.  I don't enter anything in the empty boxes.  Just click ok.  If the network is open it usually picks up an address and away I go.
good luck

I use a ma111 at hotspots and works just like hawki said.
Any empty sid will connect to the hotspot.
