Have dsl installed to pen drive...works great but can not connect to dial up...isp settings are same as hd install..

the box has internal motorola sm56 but will not work so useing external via serial port...the box has one physical

when I boot dsl the terminal ready lite blinks 3/4 times
when I click dial the TR lite comes on and stays on..no dial tone..modem is good and phone has dial tone..any ideas

or external I may find that would be better or way to check the port maby?

thanks for any

adding...bios lists two serial both on useing irq3/4 and can be turned off...not sure if xp is useing one...modem on xp is com3..all I could find

adding...Oh well..if I had a clue..I would have checked this out with the live cd before wasteing a pen...could use it on several low ram units with usb via boot floppy but would need a swap pen...if that is even possible...Hmmm..may try that...now I need another pen...

Google search suggests that most external serial will work..this one is rather old..14.4 sportster..the tower is an old acer aspire t135..how would I check the port...dmesage...what would I look for?

adding...dmesg lists serial driver 5.05c with many ports share
ttys00 @3f8 (irq4) is a 16550a
ttys01@2f8 ( irq3) is a 16550a
redundant entry in serial pci table
registar serial (): auto config failed

does this mean the serial port is not available to dsl? any way to fix..maby an internal pci modem? maby another computer?

Your demesg looked alright to me that is just com port 1 and com port 2.  If your modem lights change it sound like the com is sending something.  Maybe you could send you modem some commands with microcom.  Try ATZ and see if it responds with OK.

This web page might give you some ideas:

Thanks for the link

I did sudo su and echo atdt1234567 > /dev/ttyS0

I did this several times and on occasion got a dial tone but did not dial...
and hung up with adh > /dev/ttyS0..

if I try other than 3f8 irq4 the terminal ready lite does not come on..naturally only the ttyS changes..

The question is: is it the tower or the modem..the modem worked fine on win last time I used it..do not know what else to try..

thanks again for the link,,,handy command for testing modem....clicking dial was less responsive with no dial tones and script failed after alarm send rec?

Ok..went in search of an external serial modem today...visited 6 computer shops...the first two guys laughed when I ask for an external serial modem...the next guy did not understand the question...the next two said they did not carry them and the last guy was very polite in his seedy little shop and had one us robotics v.92 serial external with no cable for 150 bucks....yes that's correct...I got it and lucky for me the cable from the sportster fits and I am online....the price of free-dom comes to mind...haha..not sure why the sportster will not work

I hope someday these modem manufacturers will get a clue and make modems for Linux.  I guess it is too late  but you might have better luck with modems from Lucent.  I have read some other posts in this forum about people getting them working right out of the box.

My link to debian modem might be a little old because I don't think DSL has the setserial command.  This might have helped you because it almost sounded like an irq conflict if your modem would dial sometime.
