Booting with the cheat/bootcode "ssh" should do the trick.

What does this mean?? :(
I want to do the same thing in an emdebbed system ( soekris 4801 ).
I have no display and the serial port does not come up, so that leaves
me with ssh or telnet.  Neither one comes up by itself.

See < http://damnsmalllinux.org/wiki/index.php/Cheat_codes >

Since you're doing this headless setup, you might want to set it up on another computer first.

Thanks that worked, now I need to figure out what the password is!

no display?
how are you already booting the soekris 4801 ?
if you are using the syslinux.cfg file, then you can edit that.

There are no passwords by default, you need to set them.
