Hopefully a stupid question from a 20yr+ Windows IT man. I'm trying to use DSL to re-jig an old laptp to act as a media player and want to get to my files on my Windows server whcih lives in a domain.

read lots of post ref smbclint -L -U etc

Downloaded Samba still cannot get it to browse my shares that are as open as I can make them. I'm putting user details in Samba and using scan as user etc etc.

I'm doing something stupid but I don't know what

Help!

what is that you see when you click on the samba icon on your desk top?  Do you see your work group and then to you see you network machines?

See the domain, see the box, just can't see the shares. I've aslo tried with Puppy Linux where I could see the shares but then couldn't connect (trying the same scan as user etc)
I've also now created a dsl account in the domain but still no success

You need to right-click the box & then select "scan as user" put in the correct user & password to access the windows box. the shares should then show up (including the default c$, d$,... ones if  accessible with the user/password you used). right -click the shares, select mount & they will be mounted under /home/dsl/mnt.
