MA111 v2Forum: Networking Topic: MA111 v2 started by: packwood100 Posted by packwood100 on Jan. 06 2007,13:50
I realise from the posts on this forum (and others) that the MA111 v2 may work with DSL but with some effort. I have installed the XP driver NETMA111.INF and MA111nd5.sys in my /home folder.Installed with ndiswrapper and confirmed with ndiswrapper -l. However when I use the Prism2 config in the control panel to enter the SSID and WEP key the operation fails. What have I missed? Thanks. Posted by roberts on Jan. 06 2007,14:42
Are you entering the wep as colon separated pairs?12:34:45:67... Posted by packwood100 on Jan. 06 2007,15:55
Yes I have taken one of my 10 alphanumeric WEP keys and converted to HEX and entered with colons between each two digit pair.

I don't think you're supposed to use the prism2 config if you're using ndiswrapper. Try wlancardconfig (sp?) instead.

I think I have something more fundamental wrong here. Since I posted I have rebooted and the driver files are no longer in the /home folder. I do have DSL on my HD, but my /home folder is in my /ramdrive folder.Have I something wrong with my install? Posted by ^thehatsrule^ on Jan. 06 2007,17:06
no, it's fine - that is by default design for a frugal install.

So how do the drivers remain installed after reboot?

Read the Getting Started document

Thanks. So back onto the MA111 problem. What else can I try to get it working? Posted by roberts on Jan. 06 2007,21:46
You should not mix the native prism2 setup with the ndiswrapper setup. The USB Netgear MA111 works with either the native prism2 or ndiswrapper. In fact, you should be able to use either of the two GUI setup tools provided. If you choose to manually configure using ndiswrapper then after confirmation of the ndiswrapper -l command the next command should be sudo modprobe ndiswrapper This should provide the device wlan0 which you can confirm by the iwconfig command with no parameters. If you don't see a device then no point going further. You will need an appropriate .inf and .sys. If you wish to do everything manually then use the appropriate iwconfig commands or you may wish to use the wlcardconfig tool Whenever you are configuring wireless, you should boot your machine with the nodhcp boot option. Hi all, I have I have a prism2 usb wlan stick. I find the two files NETMA111.INF and MA111nd5.sys and move them in /home But when i do a " ndiswrapper -i netma111.inf" i have this message: "netma111 is already installed. Use -e to remove it" But with "ndiswrapper -l" i have this message : "netcard invalid driver! netma111 invaled driver!" so, i try a "netma111.inf" and i have " netma111.inf is not installed" If you'vegot an idea... I am pleased that someone else has picked up on this problem. I am beginning to give up on Linux as I do not seem to be able to get a wireless connection. I know this dongle works with this pc on Windows, and I have tried other working dongles but none work with Linux. One thing is consistent it is the error messages!I have had exactly the same errors as petertosh. I have also tried the manual route without success. With prism2 or ndiswrapper the connection just does not appear. I think what is needed is a clear set of instructions from someone who has it working. Otherwise Linux, or at least DSL gets a big thumbs down. Thanks, Posted by roberts on Feb. 03 2007,23:30
What does lsusb show for this device? It this a Sis162u chip device? Have you tried the driver at < http://www.sis.com > as recommended by ndiswrapper list support site? Posted by packwood100 on Feb. 04 2007,09:09
I cannot find the driver at < http://www.sis.com > for sis162u. There is a sis162 is it the same? Which version - XP?

You know, without actually owning this device, I cannot answer for certain, I can only point you to the reference site(s) that do have your device listed and what works with it. It is incumbent on you to try and not at each step ask for confirmation. Such confirmation would only be possible if I or someone else actually owned this device with this chipset. You should first verify the chipset of your device with lsusb, then... From the sis site that I pointed you to based on the readily available information provided by the ndiswrappwer support site: ------------------------------------------ File Name wlan_162_r105.zip Version v1.05 Release Date 2004-11-10 Support Products SiS162, File Size 11,912KB Support OS Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 98 SE, ------------------------------------------- It would appear to me that it is the same driver for Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Window 98 SE. Try it. Perhaps it will work. Posted by packwood100 on Feb. 07 2007,22:01
OK made a little progress on this, but still not working. I can now get to:Installed ndis drivers: sis162u driver present, hardware present ran: modprobe ndiswrapper system log shows: ndiswrapper version 1.14 loaded Crunch comes when I run: iwconfig which returns just: lo no wireless extensions. No mention of wlan0 or any other entries. Any clues as to what I try next, or have I missed something? Thanks. Posted by ^thehatsrule^ on Feb. 07 2007,23:51
I think you need to configure your network first. If you do not know how to do it from cmdline, you can use the wlancardconfig (or something like that) from DSLPanel.
