Wasn't sure if i should post this under laptops or networking, since what i'm trying to do is network my laptop..I've an old dell latitude and i'm trying to get either Kingston KNE-PC2T or 3Com Megahertz 3CCFE574BT to connect to the intarweb, and i'm not having allot of success. i plug it in, it recognizes it, give the beeps indicating that it has been detected. but actully plugging it into a working jack does not seem to have any effect. the cat5 cable and jack have been tested and are working without any doubt. what other tests can i do? or are these cards not supported? -luhps Posted by Winter Knight on Jan. 14 2007,09:06
No effect at all? If your port doesn't even light, your problem is not driver related. It is hardware related.PCI network cards almost always work out of the box with linux. So, does it light? If not, try putting it in a different slot. Doublecheck to make sure you are using the right type of cable, straight-through or cross-over. Probably straight-through. "If your link light lights, your cable is right." If it does light, try running lspci to check if it is listed there. Also, see if dmesg has any relevant errors. This assumes your cards are PCI. If they are something else, please specify. |
