MSI PC54G2 / RT2500 Newbie QueryForum: Networking Topic: MSI PC54G2 / RT2500 Newbie Query started by: ThePotato Posted by ThePotato on Jan. 21 2007,23:58
Hi all,Ok, so I downloaded DSL today as a live CD, liked what I saw and especially liked the fact that, compared to other live linux versions, DSL can run within Windows. This makes it ideal for me to put on a USB key and use, say, computers at the airport where it's not physically possible to reboot the PC itself. So, I thought I'd like to give it a try for home use and see if I can get my WIFI card working before I take the plunge and get a nice shiny 4GB USB key to put DSL onto. Therein lies my problem and the root of my questioning... how do I do so? I've verified the card isn't automatically detected and I've verified that it should work with ndiswrapper. I've looked at the location of the windows driver and found that there's a 'RT2500.sys' file in 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\'. Do I need just this or do I need a '.inf' file too as I seem to see from various places. Once I have procured the relevent files, how do I then, step-by-step, get this to load / run and stay there for next time it's booted on DSL? (please, as far as possible put this part in plain English!). The network itself uses WPA-PSK encryption, so would I have to change this to WEP or is there some kind of GUI or command-line option or interface I can use so that WPA-PSK will work? Is there any way to do a practice run of this, within DSL running on Windows (so I still have some form of net connection for reference purposes), before I set it up on the real thing? I've noticed I cannot seem to mount my HD when running DSL (certainly in the QEmu version... I am not sure in the live-CD version. I will have to test and update). Is this normal in the QEmu version? Thanks for your time and I look forward to reading your replies! Sorry about all the questions, but if I can get this woking and sorted, then my Windows can be kissed goodbye forever! No idea if ndiswrapper supports that encryption or not. |
