Need a little more information. How are you trying to connect and to what are you trying to connect?

OK, I have broadband Internet connection via eth0. After DSL has been booted and I do ifconfig it shows the wrong inet address. If I try to connect I am directed to the login web page of my ISP with which I do not want to fiddle.

As far as I remember DSL-3.1 picked the right address since I used it for a while when my slackware box was bust.

Still not enough info. Have you only been relying on whatever connection you get when DSL boots and broadcasts DHCP? What kind of broadband? Have you tried running netcardconfig/pppoeconf, etc., yourself? Do you have a reserved or static IP and have you set it up (in /etc/network/interfaces) yet?

Thanks! this message goes out with DSL correctly connected.

This time I booted not using "norestore".

Apparently I must have done the right thing before and backed it up.
