3com PCMCIA 10/100 - 3c575Forum: Networking Topic: 3com PCMCIA 10/100 - 3c575 started by: stempile Posted by stempile on April 10 2007,04:30
It appears that my pcmcia bus is working correctly. However I am unable to get a functioning eth0. I found the /lib/modules/2.4.26/pcmcia does not have what I think the driver should be: 3c575_cs.o I could be wrong about this card's required driver module.I am new to DLS and new to Debian. What are my options for getting drivers into DLS? I started with the live cd and have since installed it on the hard drive. Using an old OmniBOOK2000cs P133 with 32mb RAM and 1.5 gb hd. 'lsmod -v' gives the following for my non-working card: 0000:05:00.0 Ethernet controller: 3Com Corporation 3cCFE575BT Megahertz 10/100 LAN CardBus [Cyclone] (rev 01) Subsystem: 3Com Corporation 3C575 Megahertz 10/100 LAN Cardbus PC Card Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 64, IRA 10 I/O ports at 4800 [size=128] Thanks ms Posted by Juanito on April 10 2007,07:41
A couple of suggestions for you:1. Look on the Knoppix 3.4 CD to check if 3c575_cs.o is there. If it is there, you can copy it directly to DSL and use it. 2. Look on the 3com web site to see what it says about linux drivers for your card. Posted by stempile on April 10 2007,17:09
I downloaded knoppix 3.4 then uncompressed and mount KNOPPIX fs after running the cloop utils. Poked around in there, this was the first time playing with knoppix while not mounted as the running system. It looks like for /media/knoppix/lib/modules/2.4.26/pcmcia all of the compiled modules for KNOPPIX 3.4 are in the latest DSL. So DSL didn't strip anything out it seems. Again no 3c575 modules there.I have reviewed the following 3com site: < http://support.3com.com/infodeli/tools/nic/linuxdownload.htm > 3com didn't list any drivers that would work for 3c575. The link at the bottom for vortex appears to be old and not supported. Yesterday while google'ing I think I ran across the c source for 3c575_cs however I am not setup to do a build. Thanks ms Posted by Juanito on April 10 2007,17:58
If you burn the Knoppix iso to CD and boot from that, you might be able to build your driver without adding anything extra - it worked for me a few times.

Found this after from a google search:< http://paramount.ind.wpi.edu/pipermail/wlug/2001-September/000562.html >
I am now hunting around for the 3c59x module. Checking again the Knoppix 3.4 disk. ms Posted by stempile on April 11 2007,04:06
Found the 3c59x.o file. /lib/modules/2.4.26/kernel/drivers/net/3c59x.o Loaded the module by updating the modprobe.conf to include
After running modprobe 3c59x I see the module loaded with lsmod. So at this point my guess is that my card is junk. It has link likes and auto connects at the 100 speed. The switch thinks its good. But yet I can't get DHCP or a manual assigned IP to work. My network has 5 other devices all running DHCP ok. I am going to hunt down some other device to test the card in. Might have to test it on a windoz box. ms Posted by ^thehatsrule^ on April 11 2007,05:45
Did you run netcardconfig after?
Posted by stempile on April 11 2007,15:12
I did. While watching in another terminal I can see that eth0 is started from the output of ifconfig and that packets are being sent, however the card itself doesn't show any activity. I have use netcardconfig to update the static information as well. After messing with that took I opt'ed to modify the interfaces config file directly and used the other if related tools. I am going to test the card on another laptop to make sure it works. Just for fun I stuck it in a powerbook g4. It lights up and OS X knows that it is there and what it is, but nothing else. I googles searched on that and found that is the most I will get from the MAC and this card... ms Posted by stempile on April 11 2007,15:35
My card works fine in Windows 2000 on some dell laptop. Drivers built in. I have not booted knoppix on the laptop I have DSL running in. To get DSL running I used a boot floppy and the CD. Does Knoppix have a boot floppy option? or will the DSL floppy boot disk work to get knoppix running? Just thoughts, I have not tried it. Would knoppix be any different in terms of detecting and starting my network card? ms Posted by stempile on April 12 2007,16:25
Last night I ran knoppix on the dell laptop that I used to test the CARD with windows. Knoppix didn't have any issues with the card. Loaded up and ran using the 3c59x driver. This leaves me to wonder if the pcmcia drivers aren't working for my old omnibook 2000cs or if the pcmcia slot is bad. Still working on getting knoppix 3.4 to boot on the old laptop. ms Posted by Juanito on April 12 2007,17:40
If you can copy the knoppix iso to your old laptop hd, you can boot it from the dsl boot prompt and use it to test the card using:dsl bootfrom=/dev/hda1/path-to-iso/KNOPPIX*.iso Posted by stempile on April 12 2007,18:47
I booted Knoppix with the prior post suggestion. The network card still doesn't work. At this point I am thinking there is a problem with the pcmcia slot. I don't have any other pcmcia devices to try it out with nor do I have any other network cards to try. The rest of my hardware all has built in network cards. Thanks for the suggestions. ms Posted by Juanito on April 13 2007,04:40
There's a pcmcia button on the DSL control panel that you could try - I seem to remember you can re-set the slot with this applet, it might be worth a try...

This in my final post as I am moving on from trying to get this card to work. Also yesterday I accidentally smashed up the dongle a little, it still works (on the newer dell) however it is bent. I hate dongles. I forgot what a pain those things are!!!!I came across another card to test. This was a Symbol PCMCIA Wireless B card I didn't write down the driver it was using or the lspci info (I was excited about it working and forgot to check). This thing worked with little effort. Once I figured out how to get WEP working I was connected to my wireless network with 128 WEP without any issues. I am going to test a cheap airlink101 pcmcia card from Frys. If that works then I am in happy and came move on with what I am really trying to get accomplished. Thanks for the input. To bad this post does not end in success for the 3c575 card... ms |
