So I have my Libretto (64Mb mem) running DSL. Its screen is 800x480x24.One of its main uses is as a remote console to a number of Linux servers (almost all are Centos with Gnome-gui installed). Which remote console do you recommend I use? Network bandwidth is not much of an issue. Screen performance and memory requirements (on both ends) will be the drivers. Also it has to look reasonable and be usable on the Libretto screen. Posted by lucky13 on Aug. 31 2007,07:07
Try them out and use whatever you like. I recommend you first learn how to use SSH. It will come in handy for tunneling if your remote logins occur over any network other than your own. Most users of VNC, etc., don't understand they're operating in plain text across insecure networks or that their desktops are fully accessible by anyone scanning for open VNC ports (hint: if you don't have to sign in to remotely see or operate another desktop, neither does anyone else). Don't try this at home -- it's illegal:< http://youtube.com/watch?v=q3O5rQVRYzg > < http://youtube.com/watch?v=_7BNmublYuw > < http://youtube.com/watch?v=KWhsei-cATY > < http://youtube.com/watch?v=L8br4hpcAzE > Etc. I have been using SSH since it came out of U of Helsinki. I worked with the gang while I was co-chairing the IPsec workgroup in the IETF. So I know a bit about secure protocols (check out RFC 4423, authored by me).And I have been running VNC over SSH to Win32 servers for over 5 years. But now I am moving on. Most importantly, I am looking at my continually changing work model. I have used SSH terminal sessions and Webmin solidly for 2 years to a few servers. Now I have my Libretto pulled out of the dust bin. I want to be able to use it on the road as a easy-to-carry tool (I can almost fit it into my coat pocket). But the Libretto only has 64Mb memory (has a 4Gb CF HD, so no memory used for swap). So I have to look at the memory usage of the remote client, as well as its rendering ability when the client is 800x480 and the server is 1024x768. I also care about the server side. With VNC I have to have the server in graphics mode. A question that I have is with the others, is it enough to have the libraries? Will I save memory on the servers? (my servers are cheap boxes, and have either 256Mb or 512Mb memory, enough for their tasks while in text mode). FreeNX uses SSH naturally. I like that. Is there the NX client for DSL? |
