my modem is pctel hsp56 micromodem. I have configured ppp
but I still can't connect to the net.
It shows me this message:

Dec  1 21:43:14 box syslog.info -- MARK --

Dec  1 21:45:34 box local2.notice pppd[605]: pppd 2.4.1 started by root,
uid 0
Dec  1 21:45:34 box authpriv.notice sudo:     root : TTY=pts/0 ; PWD=/ramdisk/home/dsl ;
USER=root ; COMMAND=/usr/bin/tail -f /var/log/messages

Dec  1 21:45:35 box local2.err chat[606]: Can't get terminal parameters: Input/output error

Dec  1 21:45:35 box local2.err pppd[605]: Connect script failed
Dec  1 21:45:36 box local2.info pppd[605]: Exit.

what is the problem, is it modem driver?

Sorry, you don't have a real modem. It is a winmodem. Therefore you will need additional sofware drives, that really should be in the modem.

Hey, i'm using DSL on my sony vaio pcg-182 laptop and the modem won't work. Don't go and tell me it's a winmodem, because it's not, i had the modem working in freebsd 4.2 (which has no winmodem support), but i need linux so i can mount a usb device for school. it is using windows com port 2 (ttyS1) but i don't get a connect. you can reach me at cybur_netiks@Phreaker.net  put the subject as damn small linux modem. thanks.

With an attitude like that, I can see why he's unregistered.

First step.

try all of the available COM ports for your modem

/dev/ttyS0
/dev/ttyS1
/dev/ttyS2
/dev/ttyS3

I know this sounds stupid but sometimes the modems and serial ports get mapped to a different device name than is expected.

Attitude? first, i've been to other linux forums and they'll argue with me forever that it *must* be a winmodem, and second, i'm unregistered because i don't intend to post here often. If i start posting more often, i'll sign up. By the way cbagger01, thanks, but i've already tried that, this is really confusing me, i'll probably end up switching to a more mainstream linux like slackware or something.

Since DSL is based on knoppix which is based on Debian, it is unlikely that these distros will see your modem either.

However, slackware uses a different kernel and configuration tool so it might work fine.

Maybe you can try out slackware by using the SLAX livecd.  I have never used it, but it is supposed to be quite good.

I know for certain that getting a "dial-up" connection can be a real pain. I had the same problem connecting to the net,like none of the options listed would not work.

...well instead of choosing one of the listed COM ports I edited one of the selections to read "/dev/ttyS4" and was able to make a dial-up connection.My modem is an internal US Robotics model 5610B.I have used this modem with success with other distros but have found that every distro seems a bit different to configure.
