Hi All,

I am unable to get Dialup working. I have tried it with settings similar to Kppp, and WV dial, I have even installed the Minicom program from slackware 9.1 CDROM onto this linux  box.  However It will not connect now in 3 days of trying.

Here we have Public Non password internet, meaning, we dial it, and our phone gets charged every month.  However, the pppd  seems not to work. nothing i have tried causes it to initialize, always chat script dies, when actually nothing gets started.
I tried to look at permissions, which bring me to another question.

I cannot make sense of the graphic permissions window. It is not the standard form, of a little box with a checkmark..Like Slackware, or even knoppix..This appears to be a square, and a "brick" or Button" can be placed into it ..But which is SELECTED and Which is DEselected?    This is confusing..
:(  :(  :(

Sorry for the stupid question about dial up and  user interface, but after 3 days, this is a little frustrating.

Thanks

Which version of DSL are you using? I am using the current version of DSL 0.9.0.1 and when I follow the instructions on the Dillo page "Connecting to the Net: System>Net Setup>dial-up ppp" a rectangular gui is there with three buttons Config,Dial and Hangup also a place to insert the providers name.I start at Config and follow the on screen prompts in the "GNU/Linux PPP Configuration Utility".

I know there are some settings that you have to choose that will determine whether or not you actually can connect to your ISP.I guess there are enough variables to make it seem like an insurmountable task but some determination and trying different settings/selections you should prevail. The only real stumbling block that may cause you not to be able to connect would be a modem that is not Linux friendly.

I am using a US Robotics model 5610B internal that works for me with DSL and also with several other Linux distros. When you get to "Manually Select Modem Port" in the config utility you may have to try the different options ie:/dev/ttyS0,/dev/ttyS1 etc.I had to manually edit my selection to be "/dev/ttyS4" to make it work for me.

oh, and if you have 0.9.0 then it may not work properly as 0.9 has bugs. 0.9.1 fixes most reported bugs :)

welcome to the forums btw :)

Hi Guys,

I made the Internet work through WVDIAL.. foir some reason the pppd doesnt function with the passwordless public internet we have, Im not sure why this is the case, but in anyways, WV DIAL works, and all is really just fine.  I am trying to install PERL-TK so I can install a graphic GPRS program, then I will make a HOWTO if it is needed here.

I also used command line ls -s  to understand the Button style GUI of the permissions.. So that is worked out now.

Im using  DSL 0.8.4 variant  Ive tried a lot of different Linux,  but this one is by far the most cool Linux Ive ever seen... Its so fast even on 2 old notebooks and a PENTIUM1  desktop  tried, this is really incredible...  I even ran the Live CD on a newer Athlon  and it was flawless.. far better and faster than knoppix.. which is also fine,  But in my opinion..DSL is the way Linux should be,  and what I have searched for months with many small distributions...This  Far exceeds anything else out there...by years perhaps
