I REALLY need to trash my D-Link 802.11b garbage.
I hate this stuff.
I have a PCMCIA, USB, PCI, Router/Firewall,..... all D-Link.
The only piece that does not give me problems is the PCI card, and I only think that because I rarely use the PC that it is installed in.
I had to send the PCMCIA card back for "repair," as it only funtioned properly after the 23rd or so insert into the slot (not kidding). They returned another one to me, after 5 weeks, and it was scratched and had a dent in it. It perfomed similarly to the original one I had, then stopped working all together.
The USB works most of the time, except when it gets confused about what channel (frequency) the router is broadcasting on, then it just picks one and hopes for the best.
The router/firewall likes to reboot. Then it gets cranky for a while, then reboots again, then seems happy for a few days, reboots, gets cranky, yadda yadda yadda.
I am going to send D-Link another email (like they read them) but this one is going to be a nasty gram. I f'n hate D-Link.

Please suggest wireless components with brand and/or model for my consideration. And, NO, I will not consider other D-Link trash to contaminate my PC's with.

Linksys

You get what you pay for.

I originally bought a Netgear PCI LAN card and an SMC router.

After 1-2 years of use both of them stopped working at different times.

Replaced with a Linksys LAN card and a Linksys WLAN router and so far, so good.

Also, the Linksys "802.11g" series routers (WRT54g and WRT54gs) both run a tiny embedded version of Linux inside them.

If you download customized firmware packages, you can actually telnet or ssh into your router and install small programs (not much storage space or RAM is available) and run them.

But most importantly, the thing ACTUALLY WORKS.

The other stuff may be 10-20% cheaper in price, but when you need to buy 2 of them because the first one died after the warantee expired, it doesn't look like such a great deal after all.

I also suggest the linksys line of gear..
Both routers here, hardwired and wireless, are a joy to use.
No issues, they just work..

Just make sure you stay away from the Linksys WPC11 v3 card...I have not been able to get that to work
