P Problem: Computer with DSL has no CD, but has floppy. Computer with MacOS 8.9 has CD, no floppy. No internet connection with DSL computer right now.Goal: Download files to the Macintosh, and transfer them to the Linux machine (without having to go to a PC, download the file, get rar, split it into volumes and put it on to the laptop disk by disk.) Ultimate Goal: Getting Peng to work on DSL and connect to the internet. (I know I know, AOL sucks, but I split the bill, and its all I can afford.). Question: Is it possible to network the two computers via a regular phone cord for just file sharing, nothing more. I dont want to share internet or even be on the internet, just move files from the Mac to the Linux machine. P.S. If I'm just being stupid and there's an easier way that doesnt involve lots of money, feel free to kick me. Just let me know what the easier way is. =P Posted by clacker on Jan. 22 2005,14:13
robzulah, I'd say start with this < Modem How To >. If I remember right, there is a way to connect to machines like this, but I think you may need a cross over phone cable. One machine uses ATA and the other ATD commands, I think. There was another interesting article < here > Do you have any serial cables? You night want to look < here > for info on connecting that way. Or can you borrow a null modem cable from someone? Posted by robzulah on Jan. 25 2005,18:39
I'm using MacOS8.9 on the computer that will be the 'host" to share files with DSL. I have a cat5 ethernet cable. I know how to set up MacOS for TCP/IP, but I am clueless as to how to get DSL to buddy up with it and share some files. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Take my advice: From experience, the amount of time and frustration you are likely to endure trying this will not be worth the little bit of money you will save. Just go out and buy an external CD-ROM or something.
