ping probelms?Forum: Networking Topic: ping probelms? started by: venkriss Posted by venkriss on Feb. 26 2005,23:26
I am using 'dsl 2 nodhcp toram' option to boot from a customizable CD and I am running some scripts todo static IP addreesing based on a MAC-IP table I have. Everything works fine, eth0 gets recognized, modules are getting loaded and the IP address assignment is also fine. But the problem is I am not able to ping to other machines. Network cables are good because they are working fine when I booted into different OS. Do I need todo any more settings in DSL to make it ping with others. Please let me know, Thanks, VK Posted by cbagger01 on Feb. 27 2005,01:48
Can other machines ping you?If so, you may have a problem with your gateway definition. Posted by venkriss on Feb. 27 2005,03:47
Nope, other machines can not ping too...

you have dual boot right?are your static IP settings exactly the same? does eth ip settings come up fine with "ifconfig"? try to ping yourself "ping 127.0.0.1", and "ping 192.168.x.x" where "x" is your local static ip. then try to ping your router/gateway. ensure you can from other machines/dual boot. then try to ping your computer from your router/gateway. then try to ping a computer beyond your router/gateway... that would be the sequence i would attempt. only go on to next step after you pass one. if you can't ping yourself, no point trying to ping someone else... etc. also check other settings like firewalling (pings may be disabled by your computer or router/gateway firewall), ip/routing tables (check to make sure your ip is properly directed), and double-check your computer tcp/ip settings (like subnet mask and gateway addy). if all that doesn't work kick it! |
