< Setting up Internet Connection on Linux - By Bell Sympatico >If you read the above, it says all the stuff i have to do to setup a connection. basically, i just have to d/l a bunch of files (pls refer to the link) and then stick em in different files: specifically... free_pty, pppoe, start-pppoe, and stop-pppoe all need to go into /usr/local/bin (which ofcourse DSL doesn't allow me to do since it is on a read-only medium). now it does say that i can put em in other places, but i would need to change some code. i did chk out the code and made changes in 2 areas. now they wanted me to update /etc/ppp/chap-secrets and pap-secrets with username and pass, but i'm not exactly sure how to put it in those files because chap asks for other info as well, like server and secrets which i have no clue as to what i should put down. and pap is just messed lastly it wanted me to put options.pppoe into /etc/ppp and that was no problem. it finally wanted me to type in ifconfig eth0 0.0.0.0 up -arp and then run /usr/local/bin/start-pppoe i tried all that and it didn't work. i did notice the program to setup a connection that DSL comes with, but that didn't seem to work either (i hit yes for everything and put in the correct username and password when asked for) any idea how exactly i'm supposed to set it up or why this isn't working? pls help - i can't survive w/o internet Posted by uzi on Mar. 03 2005,02:36

Not sure why you need all the PPoe stuff etc. Maybe if you described your modem setup? I bought an external serial modem on eBay, connected it to the COM1 port, booted up dsl @ CD, and started surfing the net by clicking the DSLpanel (control panel), clicked the dialup button, clicked the configure button, put my ISP info in, configured the connection to use the COM1 port, and surfin I go. My old winmodem is collecting dust on a shelf until further notice. Posted by uzi on May 10 2005,01:23
sorry about the delay - i had kind of given up for a while.i am connecting to a dsl modem (so it requires all the login info) usually with dsl connections there is a access manager that connectes you to the internet. now i was lucky enough to have an isp that provides one for linux, unfortunately they don't assist you with the installation =\ now i did fill in all the info that DSL req'd me to and it said i connected, but i wasn't able to pull up any web pages. i was reading around and found that apparently there is some file called resolv (or something like that) that you need to put the dns servers in. anyone know where it is??? thanks |
