NIC Not RecognizedForum: Networking Topic: NIC Not Recognized started by: jimbo62 Posted by jimbo62 on April 24 2005,15:21
DSL boots and runs just fine. However, the network setup reports no network card present. (AsusTek Broadcom 440x) Is there any way to get DSL to use the NIC to connect to the Internet? Or, is there a list of "recognized" NICs somewhere? Thanks, jimbo Posted by cbagger01 on April 24 2005,19:11

OK, I can get the card recognized, configured and connect to the Internet. Now how to I make the "fixes" permanent? I have a hard drive installation, but every time I boot up, I have to go through the modprobe b44 and netcardconfig to get things working again. There must be a file somewhere that I can edit so that the setup is remembered. Thanks, jimbo Posted by cbagger01 on April 25 2005,03:31
There are three things that you need to know. All of them can be obtained by reading the documentation or searching the forums. 1) You need to learn the commands for activating your network card instead of the netcardconfig script. Search the forums for help. 2) You need to put the modprobe b44 and these commands in your /opt/bootlocal.sh script file. This script is run at bootup time, similar to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file in MSDOS. 3) Unless you are using a full hdinstall, you will need to use the backup / restore function to save your /opt/bootlocal.sh file and restore it upon bootup. Read the documentation on the web site or search the forums for keyword: *filetool.sh and search ALL FORUMS and FROM THE BEGINNING or NEWER Hope this helps. Posted by jimbo62 on April 25 2005,23:27
chagger01, I really appreciate your help. BUT, reading the documentation and searching the forums is a very, very poor way to get any meaningful help. If there is one shortcoming of Linux, it is the lousy help. These forums are supposed to be for HELP, not some smart ass reply about reading the documentation. I read the documentation for hours and I search the forums for hours and get nothing in return. I don't care about how someone got some obscure, obsolute, underpowered system to sort of boot some distro. What I want is a suggestion for MY problem, with MY system. If you can't do that, BUG OFF and let someone who doesn't feel so superior respond. Thanks, jimbo [QUOTE]There are three things that you need to know. I was not trying to give you a smart-ass reply. Was my first answer a smart-ass reply, or was it helpful? Read my other posts. I don't try to put people down. When I suggest that they look in the forums for an answer, it is because I believe that there is an answer to their problem in there somewhere. Usually, they find it themselves.Since I don't own a broadcom network card, I don't need to manually load up my network drivers and manually configure DHCP. I can't give you an answer that I don't have. However, I do know that in the past other people have done this (loaded a network driver and then bring the network configuration up using a boot script) and they have explained how to do it somewhere in the forums. This is why I suggested that you should search the forums for the information. I even went through the trouble to explain how the search function works because the search function here does not work like most other forums. Now just because I once saw the answer to your question in the forums doesn't mean that I'M GONNA SEARCH FOR HOURS ON YOUR BEHALF TO FIND IT. If you can't do the rest of the legwork then maybe you should sit and wait for someone else to help you out. I'm sure that others are lining up to be insulted by you as I write. How to use the Backup / Restore / Filetool process is a VERY commonly asked question that is explained in both the documentation and in the forums. You can't possibly miss this one. As for the MY problem, MY system thing, the first post was an answer for YOUR system. Your second request to make the "fixes" permanent is a GENERIC problem for ANY system that requires a manual driver install and network configuration. It is also commonly performed by people who have static IP addresses and do not wish to go through the netcardconfig script every time they boot up the machine. I'll shut up now. To save others the frustration of having to read documentation and be subjected to smart-ass answers, perhaps the original poster will write up what he has learned about detecting and configuring his network card, and saving the resulting changes, and submit them to the documentation maintainers, or as a How To, for the benefit of those who come after him with similar queries? Please.DeeJay Posted by ke4nt1 on April 26 2005,13:06
DeeJay,Are you suggesting a how-to for every possible combination of hardware? No need to duplicate - There are many available now - seek google.. try this for example - using a google search I quickly found this.. < http://www.pcc.com/staff/phil/usb_howto.txt > see - section 6.1 [note] You and I should get a thread going about sound/recording software for DSL. Jimbo62, Rather than complain about the "lousy help" here, and wait to be spoon-fed answers to your issues, try using cbagger01's instructions to get what you need. In the time it took you to type that lousy, insulting response to my friend there, I did a quick search in the forums for a few terms like .. broadcom AND 440 - all open forums - from the beginning save AND network - all open forums - from the beginning ...and whadda you know, everything you need to configure, save, and backup your broadcom 440 configuration permanently is right there at your fingertips.. The most amusing part of all this, is that most of the information you need was written by either the same guy you just called "smart ass" .. or by me.. If you come into a real challenge, and you show the folks here that you've already done your homework, searched google, read the forums, etc. , and STILL can't find a solution, just by demonstrating you DID the legwork, you'll get much more valuable help and TIME from others.. Since your looking for someone to provide you with direct, concise answers to your issues, count me out.. I already used my time and effort helping out people who had the exact same questions you have .. Both the questions, and the answers, of previous help sessions are stored in the forums for you to read, and to everyone's benefit. But, here is a link to get you started... < http://awphuch2000.dyndns.org:1079/linux/smart-questions/#before > ..and if you guys are really bothered by reading a little documentation, I suggest using a microsoft-based, wizard filled, point&click OS for your needs, 73 ke4nt Posted by jimbo62 on April 26 2005,14:55
Yes, the last few posts are typical of Linux geeks. "Hey newbie, go find the answer yourself, I am much too busy to share my vast knowledge of Linux with the likes of you." If it was easy, I wouldn't be asking for help in a HELP FORUM. And if you Linux experts don't want to be bothered by newbie questions, don't hang around HELP FORUMS.jimbo Posted by ke4nt1 on April 26 2005,16:23
Geek!! Expert!! WoW!! thanks.... Actually, I consider myself a n00b at so many things linux, Not long ago, I was typing my 11th post just like you have done... Without any documentation areas to browse.. With only a few hundred posts in the forums.. Without the benefit of ndiswrapper, prism, or netcardconfig scripts. (..you know the story, uphill both ways, in the snow, barefoot..) Just a keyboard, a search engine, a biz card CD, and a desire to learn. Fortunately, most everything in DSL has been done before in knoppix, so there's a fairly good chance of you finding the answers you seek from a number of sources and searches.. You know, just by the entries posted in this thread, I see all the answers to your questions about saving/restoring your broadcom config. So we've not only pointed you to the information you need to do it, we've hand delivered it to you in your own thread.. .. " give a man a fish, and he eats for a day " .. .. " teach a man how to fish, and he eats for a lifetime " .. Time to go fish, jimbo62.. And welcome to the forums.. 73 ke4nt Posted by clivesay on April 26 2005,18:30
jimbo -You must not see or read real well. You have two people that have nearly FOUR THOUSAND posts between them in this forum. One gave you detailed instructions on searching and the other even gave you the EXACT search criteria to use to locate your answer. You only had to copy/paste it into the search bar!!!! Looks to me like the guys have been more than helpful. They deserve your respect, not your childish rants. Chris Posted by jimbo62 on April 26 2005,23:07
Chris, if you think I was "given" the answer to my question, you tell me how to fix it. You won't, because you are just another Linux snob. Well, I have it fixed, no thanks to any resident Linux geek. jimbo Posted by clivesay on April 29 2005,17:45
Jimbo - Yes, you were given the answer. 1.Ke4nt gave you a link to a very detailed USB howto that included setup of the exact same card you referenced here. 2. Cbagger01 gave you detailed instructions on properly using the forum search. This would not only help you here but in any other forum you decide to join. 3. Ke4nt gave you the actual search criteria to find multiple threads containing answers you were looking for. He could have sent you a link to just one thread but that might have left out important info you could have learned from another thread. How to save your settings is in the getting started document everytime you boot DSL. I personally am writing screenshot step by step howto's for beginners you can find right here in the forums. I have one on Printing and the MyDSL system. Would a 'linux snob' do that? Truth is, we gave you the same advise I would give my own kids when looking for an answer to a problem. Bottom line here is that you did not approach this the correct way. People attempted to help you but you refused to see the forest for the trees. I have to say I am amazed at how many people perceive this arrogance in Linux. They give the impression that the Windows developers sit around with an open line to the users to be at their beck and call. If truth be known, if they asked basic questions in a Windows forum they would probably be told to go search the Microsoft Knowledgebase. Jimbo, we are trying to help you learn. try to embrace it instead of fighting. Good luck Chris Posted by gjhicks on April 30 2005,15:40
Hi there,I am a little nervous about adding to this post but trust my question will be well received. I also have a problem with a Broadcom 440 NIC not being recognised. I have (to the best I can) tried the suggestions in this thread and others, specially the suggestion to: sudo su modprobe b44 But I get the following error: Both the LEDs on the NIC are solid on. I am not sure if it is significant but during the startup process an error about not being able to modprobe "block-major-2" flashes past. Any help greatly appreciated. Geoff. Hi, Geoff.Have you tried what cbagger suggested < HERE >? Chris Posted by SaidinUnleashed on April 30 2005,17:37
You might need to grab the broadcom 550 driver from mydsl.it looks like that's not the right driver... -J.P. Posted by jimbo62 on April 30 2005,22:58
Yes Chris, your typical non help response. If you bothered to read OPs post and the reference you gave, you would see that OP did follow your hero's suggestion. If you can't offer real help, why do you reply to calls for help?jimbo

Are you sure the NIC is a Broadcom 440? I used this EXACT command at an su terminal to get my Broadcom 440 NIC recognized."modprobe b44" After the system returns you to the prompt, enter "lsmod" and see if b44 shows up in the list of modules. If it is there, just do the netcardconfig setup, either from the menu item or from a terminal prompt. Good luck, jimbo

Hi, jimbo. I referenced that post because it was a plain modprobe b44 as opposed to a modprobe -dv as seen in Geoff's screenshot. I have never used a -dv flag to insert a module so I thought that post might be helpful. I found it by using one of ke4nt's mentioned search criteria listed before. I was trying to help by doing a search for him. Grow up Have a nice day. Chris Posted by jimbo62 on April 30 2005,23:35
Chris, if you wanted to be helpful and not just look good, you would have just said "I have never used a -dv flag to insert a module". Then OP might have recognized some subtle difference between what he did and what your hero did. When you respond to a call for help, give help and don't just try to look good. That is a sure sign of an insecure and immature personality. jimbo [QUOTE]Hi, jimbo. Oops! Did not mean to cause another tiff! Thanks for the suggestion Chris. All suggestions are well taken. Yes, I did try the tip in the cbagger post - can't say why the output posted had the "-dv" in it - should have checked better before posting and creating that little storm. Am currently travelling (again) and not at my DSL PC, will try the ''modprobe b44'' tip when back. And also thanks for the suggestion about the other broadcom device. Pretty sure the 'b44' is correct, as it works fine in Feather. Once again thanks for the suggestions - please never be shy about making comments on my behalf, as I well realise my limitations. Bye for now, Geoff. |
