I've been using DSL 0.9.2 on my old notebook but just recently installed Kanotix 2005-1 on my new notebook with a 56k external modem. Everything runs fine on it, EXCEPT I cannot access my PayPal, eBay, Yahoo Mail or Hotmail accounts from my new notebook running Kanotix. What's wierd is that I tried booting Knoppix 3.7, it also didn't work. But then I pulled out my old copy of DSL 092, and it DID WORK! I'm trying to figure out WHY DSL worked when both Knoppix and Kanotix didn't . The only things I can see that are different is the Knoppix uses a different modem configuration app and it has a more recent version of Firefox. My questions for the gurus out there are: 1. Can you think of anything that might be different (in the modem settings, etc.) between how Knoppix/Kanotix sets up a dialup modem versus how DSL does it? 2. If I can't get this to work on my Kanotix install (and this is a deal killer for me) I'll have to start from scratch with a different distro. I'd consider DSL for this system, but there are ALOT of apps I'll have to install ( Blender, Wings3d, Audacity, Jack, Ardour, Cinerella, Kino, Nvo, OpenOffice, etc. etc.). This would become a VERY LARGE project... any suggestions? Thanks, Paul Posted by Rapidweather on May 07 2005,02:39
I have found that Wvdial works very well on most of my modems, that stock dial-up setups in DSL would not work with. So, I add it when ever I can. I am using the syslinux version of DSL 1.1 now, and added Wvdial in a quick and dirty fashion, by copying the Wvdial 95.20 KB file to /home/dsl, and copying my wvdial.conf file to /etc, both of these I keep on a floppy. The new DSL 1.1 will automatically save my Wvdial and settings, If I include them in my filetool.lst. In your case, all the programs you need would probably be in the big distros, like Knoppix, and not in DSL. DSL does have wonderful ways to add programs, and to make a new CD with all that included, but that may not be for the faint of heart as they say, in your case. I had to add Wvdial in Knoppix, to make use of these modems I have, some very expensive PCMCIA, and $80.00 ISA. Cheaper to put in Wvdial than to find new modems. This certainly is not going to be a final answer to your problem, just some suggestions. Posted by bigkahuna on May 07 2005,05:37
Well what do ya know, THAT WORKED! I tried a half dozen different distros and all worked except Knoppix and Kanotix. I was convinced that it had to do with how those distros configure the modem, and WVDIAL proved it... THANKS!!!WVDIAL isn't pretty or fancey, but it sure works. I'll do my homework now to figure out out to put it an easier to use form on my desktop. THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP!!! You made my day!!! Paul |
