My setting is okay ..... do I have to install samba ?

You just need to download the samba.dsl extension:

< Network and Internet Extensions >

and it should work like a charm.

Tq, I'd done that.   Probably my installation of samba is wrong or incomplete. How do I know that. Does smbstatus give the answer (from reading but could not execute).

One thing for sure I can not run (like ubuntu) /etc/init.d/samba start though the file is there .

For the help ......................... THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

Okay, this may or may not solve your problem:

On dsl you have to manually start the daemons.

Go to XShells>Root Access and at the prompt type in "smbd" and then when it gives you another prompt, type in "nmbd".

Get back to me if that doesn't help.

Also, get back to me if you need any help configuring dsl as a server because I'm very proud of my smb.conf file and would love an excuse to show off.....um....I mean share with somebody who needs a little bit of a nudge in the right direction.

:D

For the record, I've been having networking problems with my Kubuntu machine that you might have just accidentally solved for me; I'm a relative newbie, but I think everybody needs a bit of time to get comfortable with a new distro.
