Supported wireless adapters obsoleteForum: Networking Topic: Supported wireless adapters obsolete started by: trelane Posted by trelane on May 19 2005,23:50
I went to 5 different stores today with a list of supported cards for Linux in the hopes of finding at least ONE that would work with my laptop. This included Fry's, CompUSA, Best Buy, Circuit City and Pacific Radio - Los Angeles area. There's a lot of wireless adapters out there - I mean A LOT - Not a single one will work with Linux. It's almost as if someone went thru and removed all adapters that work with Linux - EVERYWHERE. My only hope now is to see if I can get my DLINK MA111 to work with wlan-ng drivers like I did with FC3 -- and that required kernel compile. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find documentation for this. I managed to come across pre-compiled binaries for Knoppix but no docs there either. Anybody have any ideas? (preferrably a good one). Thnx in Adv. T. Posted by ke4nt1 on May 20 2005,03:41
I've got a host of wireless adapters that work with DSL..Yes , my little pocket USB MA111 works fine with DSL. I recently got two at Fry's Microsoft MN720's and 730's work here with ndiswrapper I got them at Target. RangeLan (PRISM2) card works great. Ordered it from Directron.com And PCConnection.com sells the orinoco cards ( both silver and gold versions ) and most all of my pcmcia "hard-wired" cards work too.. If you have issues with the ma111, let me know hint - wlan-ng works fine here... 73 ke4nt Posted by ke4nt1 on May 20 2005,04:28
If this is the little gem you speak of ( MA111 ) ...< http://www.netgear.com.au/product....3&view= > Fry's had them marked on the shelf at 49.00 , but they were 14.99 at the register! I gots two !!! ( seems they went up a bit - now 19.99 ) < http://shop2.outpost.com/product/3684105?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG > Here's how I set it up.. Plug it in BEFORE you bootup Boot up dsl as usual.. Open the DSLPanel, and click on " Prism2 " .. for device , enter in " wlan0 " enter your channel enter your ssid ( mislabeled sid ) for your wep key, use this format. XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX ( all caps and numbers, with colons between pairs ) This is a 26 character hex for 128 bit WEP Only 10 characters for 64 bit.. click OK.. It may take a few seconds to connect.. now , open Firefox, and see if your getting out! I am. If so, great.. If not , post errors here.. Now, if so, you will find a script built for you in /opt called myprism2.sh.. Add this file to your filetool.lst in /home/dsl for backup purposes.. Also, add the line " /opt/myprism2.sh " to your /opt/bootlocal.sh file.. This will autostart the MA11 every bootup ! Now manually RUN A BACKUP !! Right=click on desktop, select System>Backup/Restore.. and BACKUP to wherever you choose to keep your backup file.. Play online a bit, then shutdown/reboot, and see if it works automatically. 73 ke4nt Posted by jmja89 on May 24 2005,22:49
SSID is correct, it's not a mislabel. It stands for Service Set Identifier.
