If we enter "pon" in the dsl desktop XTerm, it won't work. We have to su in the XTerm, enter the root password & then enter "pon" as root. To make things easier we created a telephone dial icon on the dsl desktop & added a dsl user account of "1" so that when we clicked on the icon the PPP Dial window came up, we entered 1 in the window, clicked dial & the internet connection was made. This worked the first time but after that it did not. In the subsequent PPP Dial Messages we see various USER=root ; COMMAND=/bin/kill messages
What do we need to change so that the dsl user account of "1" works every time?

Hi

Here is something I have made work.  Use the DSL control panel Dialup script to create a dialout.  Let's give it the name ms.  During the setup go into the advanced options and enable demand dialing and an idle timeout.  Now every time you try to access the internet the system should dial out.

Add the following line to /opt/bootlocal.sh

pon ms

Now make sure the following entries are in /home/dsl/filetool.lst

/opt/ppp
/opt/bootlocal.sh

Configure a backup/restore device

Now every time you boot the dialout settings will be restored and pon ms will startup but it will not dialout.

The first internet traffic will cause a dialout.  The easiest way is to start a browser and try to go to a web site.  The first try may time out before the dialout is complete but after that everyting should work.
I hope I didn't miss anything.

good luck
