GTK WARNING cannot open displayForum: Networking Topic: GTK WARNING cannot open display started by: daleraby Posted by daleraby on June 08 2005,12:37
Once upon a time I was able to use my DSL box to login to my FC3 box via ssh and then run applications such as Evolution. Lately for some reason, I get an error: "GTK WARNING ##: cannot open display:" I can get applications that do not require X11 to run with no problem. This problem manifests itself with DSL, Knoppix, and Cygwin on a Windows box when trying to access the Fedora machine remotely. None of the solutions I have seen posted anywhere have helped. Anybody got a solution?

Fedora may be using GTK2. Try loading the gtk2.dsl extension.

I will check that out, though this seems to be a problem from within the current Fedora C3 implementation of the openssh default setup. I did find a workaround by accident. One can use the vncviewer application on Fedora by entering the command "vncviewer (machine address)" and get access to the GUI. Probably not as secure as SSH, but as there is no outside access allowed and internal security involves the threat of shotgun with buckshot, its a risk I can afford.
