Is it possible to run DSL remotely from a windows XP machine? For example if I wanted to run a DSL PC without a keyboard and mouse but have full access with my fluxbox interface in a XP window. I think this is what x-server/linux is designed to do but could someone give me some hints as to what XP software I should look at (free) and linux faq or howto. Thanks Kindly regards b1m1 Posted by b1ackmai1er on July 08 2005,15:23
Ok from my google and DSL forum search I figure that I need a VNC server for DSL and a VNC viewer for XP.I have downloaded and installed the realVNC viewer on the xp machine. I have downloaded vnc4x.dsl and it has automatically installed on my DSL machine. Holy cow it works! OK this is great but is really burning up my CPU. Is there something else I cando that is more efficient? Regards b1m1 Posted by friedgold on July 08 2005,15:35
Well if you don't mind doing everything from a command line ssh would be more efficient (< putty > is probably the best ssh client to use, a ssh server is included in DSL). You can also use X forwarding over ssh. For this you'll need a X Server for windows (something like < Xming > or < Cygwin/X >) Posted by b1ackmai1er on July 08 2005,16:19
Thanks friedgold, x-forwarding sounds like the thing that i am after.Just finished reading a few of your posts on VNC Also, hope you can upload your firefox_gtk1.2 build to the testing area soon Oddly enough, firefox keeps shutting down when running over VNC for me. I have retyped this message 6 times already! Oops i think I know what it is, I am leaning on the other keyboard that is connected to the dsl box. duh! Regards b1m1 |
