It doesn't see my modemForum: Networking Topic: It doesn't see my modem started by: Kiaas Posted by Kiaas on Aug. 14 2005,06:40
I have just put DSL on my HD, i figured my modem wasn't working because I was running it off a CD, but it still doesn't work, this is also my first\second day using DSL, so far I like it...but have no idea what I am doing, and windows is easier to play around with....when it's not crashing or freezing. I use AOL, and have a 56K modem. it offers more places than I have for the manual selection, I have tried all 4 of those, all have the same answer.

Glad you're trying DSL and Linux 2 things: 1) you most likely have an internal winmodem. These are software controlled modems that are, or course, designed for windows. In many cases, they will work with linux but take some work most of the time. Tell us your modem type and we can go from there. 2) you are on AOL. AOL has their own dialer to get on their network. As far as I know, AOL under linux is not possible. BUT, hopefuly someone will correct me if I am wrong. (I discoverd this When I was on AOL). Posted by aldsl on Aug. 15 2005,07:27
Now I hv got drivers and Dialer installation wizard from 'RELIANCE' my ISP...The prob..is Linux is ot detecting modem plugeed in on COM1 or ttyS0...tried with different Comports also..how to get Linux detect and query modem..as the dialer fails at the detection stage...When I give \dwv\ttyS0 it does not repsond with any message...Plz help...can i manually install drivers from my ISP's Tarball containing Drivers and wizard...wht is the driver files on tht tarball looks like....

You're in luck. Intel wrote a Linux driver for this modem chipset. But they didn't compile a deb installer, so you will need to compile the driver from source. Here's the source - < http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts....ang=eng > |
