Ok Guys and Gals
Helpers and Admins :laugh:

help me out
i am using a cable modem
i got a Cd for it

how do i install it in linux DSL 1.3 ( dont know from where do i get 1.4 )

and the one another problem

on the server Win XP is installed
am i able to do networking with it

if yes
i got the driver for my ethernet card
how do i install it

never ever used linux beofre

That disc you've got is probably best used as a coaster. Normally with cable modems you don't need any special programs or drivers to connect to it. Plug directly to your router or modem with a CAT5 cable and that should be it. Also, DSL will connect to a windows network with no problems.

The preferred solution is to use a Cable Modem and a conneciton to a computer LAN jack, also known as a network interface card or NIC for short.

It is also possible to use a USB cable to connect your modem up to your computer, but this is not recommended because Linux modem USB drivers may not exist or work well with your modem. And since LAN cards (NICs) can be bought very cheap (under $10 US when on sale, see www.salescircular.com for sales in the USA) it is usually easier to buy a NIC and use it.

If not, you might be able to get it to work with USB by doing this:

Plug modem into USB port.
Boot up DSL.
Open an xterminal window and type:

sudo su
modprobe cdcether
netcardconfig

then choose DHCP yes and hopefully it will detect your modem connection.

then type

exit
exit

and try firefox out.

This works for some people with Motorola Surfboard model cable modems and USB connection. It also might work with some other brands.
