Hello,

I am new to dsl, but am keen to learn.

I am looking for an idiots guide to setting up networking using DSL. I have searched this forum and have found various people who have problems with various things, but i want to have some sort of list of things i should be trying, instead of just jumping in from someone elses problems.

I will explain my setup.

I am using DSL Embedded (1.4) and am running it from my usb stick, although not booting from it, just running it once windows has loaded. I simply want to get network connectivity. I have two options, run it from work but we are behind a proxy so that may be slightly more problematic. Or running it from home on my PC, which has a wireless connection. I have a Netgear Ma111 usb adapter in my computer. If it would be easier to try and get network connectivity from a wired computer i can do that too. I am just looking at getting something working and my linux skills aren't brilliant so i don;t know all the commands.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Cheers

Are you looking to make DSL a file server or just be able to surf the internet?  If DSL finds your network card then you should have no problems with network connectivity (assuming the computer is allowed on the network).  If you are looking to make DSL a file server on a window$ network (i.e. sharing files between DSL and other machines) I have a step-by-step on how to do this.  Currently it only supports hard drive installs.  I am working on a frugal Howto, but putting my notes into a howto is time consuming.  I wanted to have it out by now, but have been way too busy.  If you want to see the hard-drive howto it is located at:

I cannot get connectivity to my LAN, never mind the internet.
I disabled the DHCP option and set up a static IP address.
ifconfig gives me the right settings and I can check that TCP/IP stack is installed and OK. Pinging either the localhost or the assigned IP address brings back results.

However, it does not ping other networks hosts or the gateway.

Any clues ?
