my own incompetence...Forum: Laptops Topic: my own incompetence... started by: howlingmadhowie Posted by howlingmadhowie on Jan. 13 2006,17:38
okay, hello the positive news. it works. it works (as far as i know) perfectly. dsl on an old lebook notebook (pentium 1, 32mb ram, 2gb hard-drive, so you'd expect it to work). now my incompetence starts. as far as i know, the computer because of hardware limitations has only a very few graphics modes. these include 640x480 in glorious 16bit colour (works perfectly) and 800x600 in glorious 4bit colour (any colour you want, provided it's on this list...) which also works perfectly. in the 640x480 pixel mode, the edge of the screen isn't used. i was wondering if it's possible to get the whole screen used in this mode. i've tried setting the dpi in the nice configuration program, but that didn't seem to do anything (because i have no idea what i want, i just guessed and tried some numbers, and nothing changed. I have a 10.5inch laptop screen, so i tried various values between 60 and 80dpi and didn't see any difference on the screen) alternatively, is there a method to get x-windows to tell me what dpi is used as default? then i could multiply this by 640/800 = 4/5 (which would just leave the question as to why that doesn't work when i set it in the configuration program...) as you can tell, i have very little experience with tft-screens yours howie Posted by clivesay on Jan. 13 2006,18:28
If you booted with xvesa just go into the DSL Control Panel and click the 'XVESA' button. It will give you the valid resolutions for your PCChris Posted by howlingmadhowie on Jan. 14 2006,08:49
xvesa tells me that i can show 640x480x16, and this only. but in this setting, the display is not fully used. i can use the xsetup shellscript to select a number of different screen sizes. 800x600 fills the display exactly, while as larger sizes extend over the display (which made it difficult shutting the welcome-window when i first started dsl...). is it possible to set the 640x480x16 screensize to be magnified so it fills the whole display? using xsetup to set the dpi had no effect on my tft screen Posted by cbagger01 on Jan. 16 2006,05:16
I would try to install the XFree86.dsl extension and see if you can get your laptop's native video card driver to work.
