As the title says, this freezes on the line 'Scanning for Harddisk partitions and creating /etc/fstab' and using the failsafe option drops me in a (very limited) shell.

Can anyone help me please?

I am trying to use DSL on a Toshiba Satellite 1800.

Same problem.

I have a Toshiba Portege 4010 and have the exact same issue...Toshiba maybe?

Partial success, with my Toshiba Satellite 1800.

First, press <esc> before power on and then <F1> for the bios set up. On the second screen (<PgDn>) select "Configuration" and under "Device Configuration" change to "All Devices", then select "PC Card" and change "Controller Mode" to "Cardbus/16 bit". Use <End> to save and allow the reboot.

When DSL starts, I used the following boot instruction: dsl lang=us dma acpi=off xsetup

DSL started fine, used xsetup to select Xfbdev.

Boot proceeded completely.

/etc/fstab was created but no partitions were found. That is, the fstab file contained the line: /dev/hda /mnt/hda auto noauto,users,exec 00

But no mention of the fat partition (/dev/hda1) or the linux ext2 partition (/dev/hda6) or the linux swap partition.

I used the bios setup to set the hard disk to "Enhanced IDE" and "Standard IDE" but got the same result.

By the way, don't use the DSL "reboot" choice, it just hangs the machine. Better to use the DSL "Shut down" option.

I should mention that the hard disk works fine under Win98SE and Partition Magic has no problem finding either the linux ext2 or linux swap partitions.

Appreciate any help from those more knowledgable.
