okay. well, i got myself another cheap notebook on ebay. this time it's a little bit better, which is cool :)

dsl works well on it. gcc installed (thanks for the help) and nasm and samba server works great :)

however it does have one wierd thing, which it would be fun to solve.
when booting, (i can't find the boot messages anywhere on the hard drive, btw), gnu/linux seems to be told by the hardware, that my monitor can display 80x48, which would be great, but it can't. it manages about 80x25, with the result, that some of the boot text goes missing. it's only a minor thing, as i tend to play^[[D^[[D^[[D^[[Dwork in fluxbox anyway, and it logs me in automatically (how do you change that, btw?).

for any help i would be immensly grateful :)

You could try vga=normal: < http://damnsmalllinux.org/cgi-bin....=normal >

many thanks for your reply. I'll try out different boot options, once i've figured out the syntax of /etc/lilo.conf, because i seem to have it set on autoboot.

cool, it works:) by which i mean, now the screen is a lot smaller, smaller than my display, so i'll have a look at the rest of the vga codes and find the right one. thank-you :)
