The laptop: toshiba 3020CT, 92MB RAM, 6GB harddisk, external floppy drive, pcmcia cdrom, neomagic128XD graphics, yamaha opl3 sound card, 800x600 display

Floppy boot from poor man's install and fbdev driver OK(all versions of dsl)
Boot floppy, pcmcia floppy and external cdrom boot of version 2.3 OK using the fbdev driver

harddisk install gives error after booting from the harddisk (both the normal hd install as the frugal install to hd)
X can not start
error 104 fb0 not found

Xvesa doesn't work as the screen is all mixed up (fuzzy image and colors completely off)

I didn't find similar posts as DSL works ok as a live cd but not as a harddisk install.

Any suggestions?
thanks

Put fb800x600 in the beginning of the boot line and then dsl apm=off

Thanks doobit

I just needed to select dsl fb800x600 in grub instead of the default. It never occurred to me that the hd install would not take the live cd boot options into account.

Sorry for wasting your time.

Now I only need to get apm and sound working.
