Live CD freezes while starting upForum: Laptops Topic: Live CD freezes while starting up started by: Chasehead Posted by Chasehead on May 09 2006,00:57
Hey I have been trying to install a linux distro on my laptop for some time now with only failures. I have tried making a live cd of dsl 2.3 and booting up and it all goes well until the penguin appears in the top left corner of the screen and all the text starts appearing. What happens is is that it totally locks up when it says:"Processor 0 is Pentium II (Deschutes) 266MHz 512KB Cache)" I am not sure what to do! Posted by kerry on May 09 2006,02:15
Have you tried using the failsafe cheat code? Press F2 at start to see the list for some cheat codes.

Hey thanks for the reply! Alright I'll have to try that. What does failsafe do if you dont mind me asking?

Most toshibas that I've used DSL on require a boot code of 'nopcmcia' if there is not a pcmcia card in the slot. So try:DSL nopcmcia plus whatever other codes you need when you boot from the CD Posted by cbagger01 on May 10 2006,17:21
Try booting with:dsl mem=32M Where "32" is the size of your RAM in megabytes. Also, "mem" is lowercase and the "M" at the end is uppercase. Posted by Chasehead on May 10 2006,22:50
I appreciate all the suggestions!...except none of them worked for me . What happens is it starts to boot fine, and gets past the part I had problem I had before, except not only does the text whiz off the screen instead of following it, the whole computer screen goes black instead of loading a desktop.

Use the cheat code that got you the farthest but this time add xsetup so you can configure the screen.

dsl vga=normal xsetup nopcmcia mem=32M
