I have this 486 dx4 75 with 16 MB RAM. I've installed DSL but I can run fluxbox only with 4 bit colors. Why?

I have the same problem with screen on my Compaq Contura 430C. Dsl works fine but I can't use Dillo, Glinks or VNC. I think that is caused by a low color depth, but i don't know how configure this. All configurations I've tried have no effect, always show the same graphic configuration.
The graphic card can do 640x480 @ 256 colours.
Can I force this graphic mode?
Any kind of help is welcome

It may be that your PC's are too old: the Xvesa X-server requires a card that supports the vesa 2.0 standard, and I think this was published at the end of 1994. And as it takes some time to implement new standards, it may be that your PC's simply are too old, i.e. you can only use standard vga at 640X480@16 colours. You can check which resolutions and colour depths your PC's support by running the following command:
Xvesa -listmodes

Hi
I'm still searching a solution. The problem seems to be the KDrive (or TinyX) server. This chipset (WD90C24) is supported by XFree86 3.3.6, but not by 4.0 and next. Now I'm trying to get it work under 3.3.6 but still without results (I have a "working" XF86Setup, but I don't have free time to test it... :( ). Its a good idea check if this chipset is Vesa compatible. I'll search this way...
Thanks for your advice!!

Hello
I've tested the sample XF86Config file under XFree 3.3.6 and works on 640x480@8bpp (SVGA server). It's not perfect but it works... And the question is if it's possible port this configuration to DSL (I tested this using an old distro that includes 3.3.6). It's possible install XFree86 3.3.6 instead of TinyX????
Any kind of help is welcome.
Thanks
