I'm trying to boot DSL on my Toshiba Satellite. Its really old, 400mhz Intel, 64mb ram, etc... The first time i tried booting it froze right after it said it detected my processor. After that i used the "nousb" boot parameter and it worked fine. However, i have a D-link DWL-122 USB adapter and I need to be able to use that adapter or bust. Can i do anything or am I screwed?

Try to modprobe your usb port:
sudo modprobe usb-ohci

If it gives no error then your usb port should work, then modprobe your adapters module.

ftp://ftp.linux-wlan.org/pub/linux-wlan-ng/

There is linux drivers for your card but i don't know how to make it to work with dsl.

So i will step out from this topic and let some wiser guy to help you.

Edit:  From the readme of the drivers:

A) Make sure your kernel usb support is running
B) Plug in the Prism2.x USB device
C) Run 'modprobe prism2_usb prism2_doreset=1' to load the driver into memory.
D) Run 'wlanctl-ng wlan0 lnxreq_ifstate ifstate=enable' to initialize the
  driver+MAC functions.
E) Run 'wlanctl-ng wlan0 lnxreq_autojoin ssid=<your ssid> authtype=opensystem'
to enable the MAC in Infrastructure Station mode.
F) Run 'ifconfig wlan0 <your IP address>'

r3dhat,

Something that I use often when I boot a toshiba without any pcmcia cards in it is the nopcmcia boot code.

The machine usually locks up trying to scan the pcmcia slots. Which occurs after you see the processor message. So try booting with:

dsl vga=normal nopcmcia

and see if that works.  Then you can try what Someone is suggesting.
After it boots you can open a terminal and do a:
dmesg
command and see if your usb device has been found. Keep posting messages and doing searches. Post as much info as possible (what version of dsl you're using, how you are booting (livecd, usb, frugal, etc), what boot parms you've used, anything you think might help)

I'm usually as lost as most with usb and network cards but someone might read it and be able to help

good luck

Hello all

First ley me introduce myself , Can click on icons , move files around, and get the blue screen of death quite quickly.  You gussed it , I can drive the car but dont have much idea of whats going on under the hood

I installed DSL, as me and Mr Gates arent quite seeing eye to eye on a fundamental issue

So not only are the laptops in unsafe hands, but I am a complete new fella on the Linux block

SOOO FAAR  ,,I like it , DSL has some great features, X kill etc

But

One of my laptops , a Sony Vio ( old )  Celeron???? ( not the new one ..but the old Steam powered one ( thats whats on the sticker , designed for 98 )4 Gig , 64 ram  ..doesnt want to know my USB
The other lap top a fujitsu pentium 3 128 ram 20 gig works just  fine.

EXCEPT .....

If you swap usb drives  ie take one out and plug another in ...it doesnt recognise the new USB.

BOTH are running the  2,4.6 kernel ,  the only thing I can see in the Sony is the bios doent mention USB , ( in windows XP it worked fine if slow and it was always running off the HD )

any help

Please dont get all technical on me .... please ....

I really want to make this  linux work as it looks real good

( the sony only uses 30% ram when running ..how cool is that !!)

sony builds in a feature that only lets you run the sony recovery cd that comes with the system to install there system back on. i personally had nothing but problems with those things. are you trying to install or just run from the usb? also what DSL version are you running?

If I know what I am looking for and where I could have a stab at fixing it  :D
