compaq evo n115 touchpad problemsForum: Laptops Topic: compaq evo n115 touchpad problems started by: sgcplayer Posted by sgcplayer on July 23 2006,06:12
I am using a Compaq evo N115 laptop with an AMD Duron processor and I'd like to make the touchpad work. Right now the only way I can use a mouse is to plug in a USB mouse before boot. I'm using DSL v 3.0.1From the searches I've done, it sounds like I need to install XFree86.dsl, but I don't understand the instructions that I've found so far. I'd like to keep booting off the CD and not install on the harddrive. Is there a way I can burn the installation to the CD so it's permanent? Any help would be greatly appreciated! You could use the mkmydsl script that's included on the cd, or manually place your extensions/backups to the / or /mydsl of the cdrom for autoloading, or remaster the dsl image.

I think I found the mkmydsl script, but how do I make that permanent? How do I install files on a CD-R that's already been burned and closed? Several pages I've found seem to assume that everyone already knows how to do that. Am I missing something obvious? (I am new to Linux)Thanks! Stephen Posted by ^thehatsrule^ on July 23 2006,18:27
Burn to a new disk. You could, of course, create another track, but it won't be seen by the regular tools I should think. I use CD-RW's myself, though. Posted by sgcplayer on July 23 2006,19:34
OK, I understand. Is there another option to burning to a CD? My laptop does not have a CD burner. Could I create a disk image and transfer it with a USB drive or something?s Posted by ^thehatsrule^ on July 23 2006,19:57
If you have a hard drive, you could install DSL to that, or just save the extensions to the hdd (or usb too) but still use the livecd.Actually, you could also install it to your usb, and boot off that. Posted by sgcplayer on July 24 2006,18:13
I got some more steps worked out. I don't know how to get the laptop to boot from the USB (I can't seem to get to BIOS using any of the methods I'm familiar with), so I decided to just back up and restore from the USB drive, and still boot from the CD. I tried just changing some minor things and backing them up, and that seemed to work.I installed XFree86 and the XF86Config-4 file successfully, edited the .xserverrc file as per instructions, and got everything working. I could exit xterm and restart it, and it would work fine. Then I tried to shut down and reboot, and I got the error message that it could not exec /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 because there was "no such file". How do I get that part to work? I've searched around but all the instructions I've seen seem to stop short of helping with this error. Posted by ^thehatsrule^ on July 25 2006,03:02
I suppose your backup was restored, but XFree86 wasn't installed. You have to load the XFree86 extension _before_ you launch X after every reboot (everything is gone since it was in your ramdisk) Use the mydsl autoload features, or manually mydsl-load it. |
