Hi,

I used to run DSL on a IBM Thinkpad T20 and it would go to sleep when I closed the lid. Now I have a Sony Vaio SR33 laptop which doesnt go to sleep by just closing the lid. In Windows I could make it go to sleep by pressing Fn-Esc. Can someone let me know how I can configure my laptop so that I can have a keyboard shortcut to make it go to sleep? I am willing to learn some shell programming if needed in order to write a command line program to make this possible. I just would like to know where to start learning about how to manage the power supply so that the power shuts off from the rest of the system except the RAM. Can someone please help?

Thanks.

Have you figured this one out yet?

Perhaps check your BIOS settings (I press F2 at the sony splash screen).  For my VAIO z505sx, the 'power' settings include an option for "Lid Close Action."

Also, if you have ACPI active, it will override the BIOS settings.  Play with disabling ACPI, APM, PCI, etc ... Of course, mucking with those will mess with other things, but ... maybe it will help figure out what is/isn't working.

You said that in windows it would sleep with a key combination. Did it sleep by closing the lid?

Personally, I have found getting windows to sleep is like getting a newborn to sleep--it does when it wants to, and then without warning.

:)

More seriously, I have basically decided that sleep is mysterious and overrated, and that shutting down is usually the best bet. I had a Vaio pcg r505, and sleep was my enemy. It's still my enemy on a dell x1, and a dell 600m, so either I am really thick (which is *very* possible), or sleep is just not such a great idea.

Another thought: my VAIO z505sx doesn't have a standby/sleep option when I run pci=off, noapm, noacpi ... but it -does- like it when I run pci=noacpi.
I'm interested in hearing whether you've solved this.
