I decided to take the plunge and convert an old laptop to linux.  Currently, I'm booting from Live CD, but I'd eventually like to get DSL installed to the hard drive.

Right now, I'm having problems with the display.  The monitor is only diplaying part of my desktop.  How can I change the resolution so that I can see the entire monitor?

Thanks, but I'm still having problems.
When I run xsetup.sh and select a different resolution, there seems to be no change taking place. What am I doing wrong? Should it work from LiveCD?

Thanks, that worked to change the resolution.

I went ahead with a Hard Disk Install.  It seems to work, and I have the proper resolution displayed once I log in and X is started, but I have another problem I'd like help with.

When it boots up, the login screen isn't fully displayed because it's using the default 1024X768 resolution.  I won't be able to even see the login prompt unless it boots in 1024X600 or 800X600.  It doesn't seem to switch resolutions until after X is started. How can I do this during boot so that I can see the login prompt?

I just found a section in the cheatcodes that might do what I want.  I'll be experimenting with that for a while.  If you have better ideas, please let me know.

Yea, you'll probably have to experiment with either the vga and/or fb bootcodes.

Arg.  I was hoping I wouldn't have to install Xfree86.  I have DSL 3.0 running now on my Fujitsu Lifebook 1120... 1024x600 is NOT that weird of a resolution, there are a lot of us out here.  I wish there was a more simple way to get it going in the regular DSL distro.

there is an easier way to do this.

Go to /bootlocal/grub and edit the file menu.lst

Move the right boot option to the top of the file, in your case, it should be the one with 1024X600 or 800x600. The first boot option is the default. Hope it helps. good luck.

There is no 1024x600 option under menu.lst.

1024x768 or 800x600 are the closest options, either looks awful.

Assume you are using the boot loader grub -- most people do.  then you can specify the default resolution by change the file /boot/grub/menu.lst. For 1024X768, you should move the line " kernel /boot/linux24 root=/dev/hda3 vga=791..." to the top, for 800x600, you should move the line " kernel /boot/linux24 root=/dev/hda3 vga=788 .. " to the first line. Here is also the place if you want to change the boot options. For a toshib 300CT, i would think you may want to add noacpi, noapm, noscsi, nodma. I don't know if 300CT has usb port.

I have a 110CT with 16MB, so i also need to add mem=16M.

If you follow the instructions at the foot of the page regarding Additional Modes you shuold be able to find the correct number to use for your system. If you're not certain PM a copy of the output from 'Xvesa -listmodes'.
