A d-link 650 and an orinoco card both get rejected most of the time by my old laptop (NOT in sig) with the error in the topic title. I eject/insert/reset them and it just keeps giving me that error and the low-pitch Failure system beep. Any additional info you need? I wish I could figure this out because it's the only laptop I have with a decent battery :(

Some older laptops won't take newer cardbus type cards.
Might want to post your lappy specs too.

Sometimes this will help. Type this at first boot prompt

boot: dsl pci=assign_busses

It's a toshiba satellite 2515CDS. The cards work all the time under windows and occaisionally under linux, so they're compatible with the laptop.

Oh, and I don't know how I'd get a boot prompt; I've installed it on the laptop's hard disk.

Edit your bootloader to append that line.

ie, in a frugal+grub, open /cdrom/boot/grub/menu.lst with root privileges with a text editor and add that pci line to the kernel line

That seems to have fixed it.  I just rebooted it twice and it's working both times.    Awesome!
