where exactly do i enter the "dsl vga=xxx" code? i tried it in the console, i tried exiting the server and entering it in the console there. each time i get told that "dsl" isnt a recognized command. when i try 'startx' it uses the setting that i chose from xsetup last, like the 'dsl vga=xxx' command i used did nothing, which leads me to elieve that i am entering it in the wrong place.

i feel stupid because i have done this before when i first installed DSL (for some reason when i turned my laptop on this morning it reverted to a different mode), but dont remember what i did exactly.

my main box's HD just died on my yesterday along with all my stuff, so this old 1990's era compaq is my last option for now :(. thanks.

On a installed system, it's used int the grub or lilo boot command line. If you're boot manager is Grub then when the menu shows at initial boot up press e to edit the boot command line and append vga=788

To make it permanent you'll need to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst

hm, i think i am using lilo, there is no menu.and that would explain why editing that menu.lst file does nothing.

so, how do i either switch to grub (if possible) or do this in lilo?
thanks.
