I have an old HP OmniBook 4150 which I am trying to run DSL on.  The sound card is causeing problems.  It finds it as a "MagicMedia 256AV Audio", and it looks like it is trying to load "nm256_audio", but it just hangs at that point.
Is there anyway to disable just the autodetection so I can find it later, or do I have to go through failsafe to boot up?

Try the boot parameter "noaudio".
Perhaps also try the boot parameter "acpi=off" - I've read that this can solve various bootup problems.
