hi there everybody...

i am using linux distros for some time now but this is da first time i found this one...

it looks interesting and i am thinking of trying it...

i have an old

Compaq Armada 1120
CPU: Pentium (100 MHz i think)
RAM: 8 MB
HD: 850 MB
Graphic: Cirrus Logic

now i would like to know can i use (with no turtle like action)DSL on this laptop without any hardware upgrades, because right now on this laptop is it's original windows 95 install and it works pretty good.
i would like to know what can i expect: will DSL's performance (speed, data manipulation, etc) be similar compared to windows 95.
i wish to note that i cant wait to get rid of the winblows, but at the same time i cant afford to invest some 50EURO for extra 32 MB DIMM RAM module because the laptop itself is that much.

please help.

thanx.

8mb of ram?

DSL will be slow on it, but win95 is teh suck.

fire it up from live-cd and have a test.

Does it get any better if he does HD-install AND fires up a little swap partition?
And is 8megs really enough for fluxbox if there is no swap even?

Like SaidinUnleashed already told you Alcak, try to fire it up from a CD and check how bad it is.

I've been reading almost all posta bout dsl and old hardware for a year and the least hardware dsl is running on is a 486 12Mhz with a swap partition on.
It seems that there reallly is no hope of making it run with 8Mhz, even with swap.
Nevertheless, it's always worth trying...
(btw, maybe you can get a simple 8 or 16 Mhz dimm for muche less than 50 euros..)

I believe 8Megs isnt gonna make the cut.
Even with 16Megs of ram on my old 75Mhz laptop it takes 12-14 just for the small x that DSL has to run (no icons on 0.7.3) 8Megs will either grind to a halt or not run at all, even with a huge swap

I would recommend minimum 16-32Megs for DSL, otherwise running it in X will bog it down to unuseable...text only might be a different story

I got this site from another post I have going on the HD Install section:

They're all floppy distros.  Keep in mind each one has it's own little usage, none of them can do everything like DSL.

Also take a look at Basic Linux, < http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/baslinux/ > - it is about the only linux distro that will run X with only 8 MB.

My suggestion is to spend a tiny bit of money, even though it is a worthless dinosaur...it will be alive and kicking (an fast as hell to many peoples disbelief) if you could slap 32+Megs of ram in that mug for under 40 bucks!!!
